When you drink a really good beer, you just know it. It has nothing to do with individual notes or particular shades of flavor. It’s holistic. You know it even before you are sure what you are tasting.
Family Matters is one of those beers. Brewed at Ex Novo Brewing, with an assist from Seattle’s Urban Family Brewing, Family Matters was dry-hopped and aged in Sauvignon Blanc barrels. It tastes perfect. It’s got a nice sharp lemony flavor, with a definite vinous edge, pears, apricots. Brettanomyces adds a dusting of must. Dry-hopping gives Family Matters a certain freshness, a brightness to the citrus flavor, adding a bitter counterpoint. Oh and then theirs the oak. You definitely taste the oak. But what really stands out is the way it all comes together in a perfect sip of beer.
