While driving back from Yosemite I stopped into the Devil’s Postpile National Monument near Mammoth Lakes. It was one of those places that I had always wanted to check out but never stop in because I was heading somewhere else. After parking at the ski village I grabbed the shuttle which took me to the trail head. I stopped to explore the actual post pile which was magnificent in design. It was formed by cooling basalt which turned into hexagonal cylinders that rose from the earth. The hike from there was dusty and it took me by a section of the park that was battered over the winter by an incredibly strong wind storm. It took down over 100 trees and just left the landscape totally devastated. From there,the trail wound down to Rainbow Falls where they were running in full force despite the dry summer. Look what I picked from the garden today. The tomatoes might have caught a virus. The cucumbers might have been killed by bugs. But god help me if I didn't make sure my green beans, peppers and herbs survived!!! I'm going straight to the kitchen to cook these 4 beautiful green beans. Boo.
