(1/2) As you’ve pointed out before, there’s always been this awkward and almost uncomfortable dynamic between Dae and Senguri. I’ve been musing on it lately, especially so when I stumbled on this one translation of Dae’s interview. You know his analogy of BB being a 5 piece puzzle? Well the interviewer said how it was a “miraculous 5 piece group” and he replied questioning if 5 piece was good, or was 4 piece better while pointing to Senguri’s picture.
(2/2) It definitely was treated as a joke at that time, but looking at it now? Hm. You’re right about your recent post, though, the signs were always there…
Oh do not even get me started. I’ve been obsessed with the DaeRi dynamic for years and have written about it probably more than is healthy – the underlying tension, the awkwardness, the strained attempts at appearing close when they seemed anything but…
Here’s the first thing that popped into my head upon reading this ask, probably because I was reconsidering this fan account just last week (from D na Show, 8/25/17):
At the time I remember being like, “Dude, Daesung! What is your deal with Seungri?” I didn’t find it funny and I couldn’t understand why he would let something like that slip out. And then try to make up for it with “closest, most loved”… unless that was sarcasm. Hard to tell from text alone. Of course I didn’t like it when he said stuff like this, but I figured there had to be a reason for it. Had to be.
Next, I was watching that time capsule clip from Welcoming Collection 2017 last night and landed on this little DaeRi interaction… pretending to have jumped 5 years into the future…
The others jump on the joke. For the sake of brevity, YB says, “Hey Seungri, I heard your news. Is that problem solved? Seungri kept calling me to borrow money.”
In some US prisons the only way you can see and speak with the inmates is through cameras – i.e., video calls. Not sure if this is how it’s done in Korea or if that’s what he meant, but y’know. Also, missing Seungri’s call… call from prison?
That’s when Seungri tries to steer the conversation in another direction, deciding to go for Daesung’s looks (because he started it…?)
There was a surprisingly long pause between this and Daesung’s reply, which, when it came, I thought was a little weak by his standards (“I didn’t get surgery on the eyes.”) He’s usually better (read: sassier) than that… and quicker. He definitely missed a beat or two. I think Seungri caught him off-guard with that one.
Let’s be real, DaeRi could be catty with each other when they wanted to be. There’s a reason why they often ended up fighting in my fics.
