Okay, so because I'm so so tired of seeing people answer the question; "what is pro-shipping?" with the same; "ew pedo supporters" and "all they want to go is explore gross things" I'm going to define the actual meaning and origin behind pro-shipping.
Pro-shipping is the 'new' moniker for the concepts of SALP and FIFF.
SALP: Ship and Let Ship.
FIFF: Fiction Is For Fun.
SALP and 'anti' both evolved at the same time and their origin is as simple as the fact that when shipping became more popular in fandom spaces, people became self proclaimed 'antis' of X ship, usually for insignificant reasons such as they simply didn't like the ship, didn't like the characters or preferred them to be paired with other characters.
'Anti' back then wasn't connotated with being anti-pedophilia, anti-dark-fic, anti-BDSM, ect. If you were an 'anti' it literally just meant you were actively against certain ships and, in many cases, were very loud about it.
SALP sprang up in retaliation. Much the same as the core values of pro-shipping, SALP's core values were that ships were fictional, supposed to be fun, and that nobody should be harassing people over fictional ships.
Over time SALP has evolved into pro-shipping, which should honestly just be rebranded as pro-fiction, because now it relates less to actual ships themselves and more the type of content being generated.
(Which, yes, includes stuff like incest, dark fic, trauma storylines, ect.)
Likewise 'anti' has now evolved to encompass those things too. Its just a classic case of word association and societal hiveminding.
Opinions on children in adult spaces (i.e. teenagers in nsfw-based communities?
also putting this under a cut bc i’ve been thinking about this ever since I was a teenager in adult/smut spaces lol so i have years and years of thoughts to share
okay so… tbh. teenagers are gonna find porn. the internet has made that so easy. and i think adults should be able to post whatever they want in adult spaces, yanno? i wish there was an easy way to filter that stuff, but there’s just not. and i’d say it’s on that teenager’s parental figures to keep them safe, but i think the best they can do is to keep them educated and responsible, bc i can also definitely see how difficult it is for parents to keep their teenage children (and honestly sometimes younger) away from adult spaces on the internet. hell, the first porn i ever encountered was written in a published book marketed to teens, and it was graphic! like!! it’s so easy for teenagers to find porn, even without the internet, but the internet makes it a whole lot easier. so like, i dont think it’s reaaaally adults’ responsibilites to keep teenagers off their smut, bc it’s inevitable. and honestly, teenagers know about sex, teenagers have sex. and while i don’t think you should encourage minors to interact w smut (for example, i’ve had minors dm me about smutty stuff and i shut it down bc i dont wanna talk to teenagers about explicit stuff, like that’s just not right), but if you put something out there, you can’t help who sees it. it’s a hazard of the internet. and if teenagers don’t see your smut, they’ll see someone else’s, or they’ll go on pornhub and see actual porn videos. and tbh, speaking from my own experience, I’m glad that i found fic smut before i found pornhub and all that, bc fic is largely written by queer people and women, whereas videos on sites like pornhub are largely made by and for cishet men (most of whom hate women). don’t get me wrong, i know there are some unhealthy smut fics out there, but i’d say the chances of finding a healthy smut fic are much higher than finding a healthy porn video, if that makes sense. and also, i think schools are responsible for comprehensive, effective sex ed, again, not fanfic writers who are just writing for fun as a hobby.
however, i personally try to be at least kind of aware of the teenagers that might be reading my fics in the sense that i try to portray healthy sex, or show the ramifications if it’s not, if that makes sense? like i loveee writing about how in love the characters in my smut fics are lmao, and if i do write angry sex like, there are negative emotions afterward, like a try not to glorify it. like it’s interesting to write and read about, but not so fun in practice lol. and also like, in kinkier fics im always like “do not try this at home without actual research!! this is not research!! this is fiction!!” and even with that warning i make sure consent is clear and that it’s obvious that the characters all trust each other and care about one another.
but still, even though that’s something i like to do, i think it’s the responsibility of parents and schools to first acknowledge that kids have access to many forms of porn, and then make sure teenagers are safe and responsible when it comes to sex. and that doesn’t mean abstinence, or even porn bans necessarily, but just explaining that sex should make both (or all) people involved feel good, and you know, all that other stuff i would know to say if i was a parent or a sex ed teacher, of which i am neither lol.
so yeah this is a big societal problem that people have been trying to solve since the creation of the internet, and i am just one twenty-year-old lol, but that’s my take on things
the vague was wrong of me but I stand by what i said. i should've said it in the dms and I'm sorry for all the trouble this has caused. im jsut an overdramatic powerhungry rat w low self esteem and i wrote that all out in anger and for that I'm sorry. I create drama and I admit that I've been bitchy myself and for that I'm sorry. feel free to unfollow me. i don't deserve any of u honestly. I'm very sorry to everyone this has affected, and although I do not take back what I said, I regret the way that I went about this.
