Pt 1: I read that NVLD is going to be in the dsm-6 as a Autism spectrum disorder. I'm excited as it means I'll have an IEP with better accommodations than what I currently have (a 504 with only extra time and the ability to leave class when experiencing sensory overload.) I'm excited, but I wanted to know your opinion on this! Of all my research, and talking I've done with my autistic friend it seems people with nvld have p much the same experience as autistic people, we just learn to talk early
Pt 2: do you know this to be true? I know most of the time it is misdiagnosed as autism, and it’s considered an autism presenting disorder (people who have it come across as autistic.) Most proffesional papers I’ve read by neuropsychologists believe it should be on the spectrum, and over all my experiences line up almost perfectly with the actually autistic tag, but I also can’t tell spacial relations. Thank you! Have a nice day!——————That is absolutely fantastic that it’s going to be in DSM6!! I hadn’t heard that yet! Personally, I believe that they are distinct disorders, although they present similarly. I honestly don’t care if it is considered an ASD or not, so long as it is not lumped in as autism itself simply because they are indeed different. ASD tends to be caused by left hemisphere dysfunction whereas NVLD is caused by right hemisphere dysfunction. Additionally, the two have different diagnostic criteria. Although they are both developmental disorders, NVLD does not become evident until grade school at the very very earliest. Usually with Autism, symptoms are noticeable very early on. Although this can be the case with nvld, the early symptoms typically aren’t as “alarming”. They conditions are both very similar in that they have very specific learning methods associated with each individual and that nonverbal communication is challenging, as well as attention and hyperactivity, anxiety, and hyperfixations/ special interests. So honestly I don’t know if it is an ASD, but I do know it is separate from autism and aspergers itself, and as long as that is recognized I’m super happy. But I’m super excited it’s finally going to be recognized!!!! And for me too a lot of my experiences line up with those of people with autism, but I think that is just because of the frustrations of society wanting us to "function normally" as well as non-verbal challenges. I hope that answers your question! If not feel free to message again!!!!!!!
(Also, fun fact my dr. is one of the leading NVLD researchers. He's super cool. He does however believe that the conditions are separate. Like how ODD is separate from ADHD. Although there are overlaps such as impulse control etc, the cause and 'treatment' are different)
I got an early copy of the DSM VI and the only thing listed in it is 'Swagless'
Hey can i take your boyfriend's picture? yea it's for the new DSM yea they're making another one yea he's in there
i think they should put “ambiguous disorder” in the dsm-6
if everyone here keeps acting like this I'm going to be in the obligation to put "Tumblr User" in the DSM-6
