so uh I have a theory about the mist twister. Which I think might help justify it's existence?
Particularly what it's based on, and what I think it might be the origin of in the HTTYD universe.
This is Wu and Wei, the Mist Twister attached to the main cast of The Nine Realms.
Mist Twisters are two-headed tidal class dragons, one head shoots fire, the other shoots water.
And in actual chinese myth, there is a two headed dragon, albeit with much different anatomy
Hong or Jiang, the Rainbow Dragon of chinese myth. It is considered aligned with Yin, as it controls water.
In real life, rainbows are created when light is refracted through water.
What is something that creates light? Fire.
one head of a mist twister shoots fire, the other shoots water, like I said earlier.
So, the Mist Twister is Hong, and I have reason to believe this, due to concept art.
The multi-colored tail fan!
Plus, since white is all the colors of light together, and black is the absence of light, it would make sense.
So, basically, the mist twister is Hong with much more realistic anatomy.

The Hidden World Itself
Part 1 - Opening / Part 2 - What ARE Dragons? / (You're Here!) Part 3 - The Hidden World Itself / Part 4 - The Main Dragons / Part 5 - The Main Humans / Part 6 - Story Time
-----
The Hidden World we see in the third movie IS NOT THE ONLY PARTS OF IT THERE ARE.
the hidden world is, essentially, a cave the size of eurasia, a continental cavern basically.
odd alien tech and chemicals are why some parts of the landscape seem to... defy gravity.
It has nine major biomes, "kingdoms" as the dragon club calls them, each with many sub-biomes within them.
The Hidden World is, also, split into four sublayers.
Rest is under the cut because this will be a looooooooong post.
-----
Sublayer 1
-
The Reef Kingdom - Asgard
The Reef Kingdom is essentially the stuff we see in THW, with many coral reefs outside of water due to the sheer moisture in this part of the hidden world, it's also very warm and generally very hospitable to the majority of dragons. Quite peculiarly, the Reef Kingdom has the fewest spaces of "false sky", false skies in the hidden world are essentially where a sheet of gass or crystals on the cave ceiling appear as though they are a sky on the hidden world's cavernous ceiling
The Reef Kingdom's ocean is connected to that of the Crystal Kingdom's.
The Reef Kingdom is also the largest of the realm's closest to the surface.
A list of the Reef Kingdom's typical draconic inhabitants:
Night Fury
Light Fury
Nightlight
Tideglider
Scauldron
Thunderdrum
Shockjaw
Fireworm
Scuttleclaw
-
The Nature Kingdom - Midgard
The Nature Kingdom is full of flora and life, both familiar and celestial, as much of the hidden world's plant-life... is from beyond our star. there is also very much plant life originating from the mesozoic era.
This realm's false sky is created thanks to a vast sheet of luminous bluish-greenish gas, the seeming "planetoids" in the sky seen on occasion are simply odd crystal formations on the cavern ceiling, tricks of the light, or gas formations.
it is also where the P̸͈̲̹͎̖̄͑̒͑̎͂̅̈́̔͛̾̏̑͑̕͜͝͝r̵̨̧͕͇̋̉͌̊̃́́̏͛̊̑͗̒̏͘̕͝į̵͇̳͙̘̻̞̄̽̔͜s̵͍̳̙͎̣̐̐́̒̈́̇̄̔̓̄́͒̈͌͂̄̕̕m̶̡̨̻̭̗͕̮͖͖̯̲̥͍̖͎͋͐̈̃̓́̒̓͆͝b̷̺̗̟͖͇̠͍̩̥̿͛̓̆̀͊͗̂̃̈́̔̊̉͋̽͒͝͝͝ą̶͕̫̘̖̥͓͇̇͐̋͜ͅͅc̶͔̹͈̙̯̈́͛̐̿́̌͗̈́̓̽̈̍̓̓̓̋͘͘͜͝͠ķ̴̼̝̝̮̟̪̌̀̚̕ͅ slumbers.

Deadly Nadder
Featherhide
Hideous Zippleback
Vinetail
Snaptrapper
Hackatoo
Raincutter
Windstriker
Hobblegrunt
Thornridge
Woodchipper
Hobgobbler
Snifflehide
Snifflehunch
-
The Crystal Kingdom - Alfheim
The Crystal Kingdom, like it's name would suggest, is full of luminous crystals. It is the even hotter sister of the Reef Kingdom.
half the realm is caverns and canyons up to the false-star-speckled skies, and the rest is crystalline islands scattered about the underground oceans.
Also quite peculiarly, placed on the kingdom's boundary with the ice kingdom, is a sort of "mirror maze" of tall salt crystals.
it is also home to the highest concentration of dracolite in the Hidden World, Dracolite is the reason it is even LIVEABLE as an area. Three varieties of Dracolite are fairly common, Blue Dracolite is what creates "skies" underground, Green Dracolite is oxygenating when exposed to dragon flame, and Red Dracolite is a narcotic of sorts, it causes rapid moodswings in mammalians but is like caffeine to dragons.
Some of it's residents are:
Gembreaker
Terrible Terror
Floodfang
Whispering Death
Sliquifier
Shellfire
Sand Wraith
Flightmare
Crystalback*
*The Crystalback is the new name of the Forever Crystal/Gem Blaster
-
The Ice Kingdom - Niflheim
The Ice Kingdom is a desolate, primordial landscape, it has very few places filled with life, aside from the Iceshroom Groves, Eruptodon Mountain, and Mt. Yin-Yang. The Ice Kingdom is, also, peculiarly, the most similar to the distant moon that dragonkind originates.
The kingdom is also filled with many strange ruins of metal jutting out of the snow....
The Spirefields, impossibly naturally made torches, dot many areas throughout the Ice Kingdom.
The Ice Kingdom is inhabited by:
Timberjack
Snowtail
Yetiwing
Mist Twister
Snow Wraith
Wooly Howl
Shadow Glider
Shadow Bomber
Shivertooth
Groncicle
Eruptodon
Sentinel
Boneknapper
Grim Gnasher
Stormcutter

Sublayer 2
-
The Giant Kingdom - Jotunheim
This realm is home to many extremely oversized flora, and dragons that are either just as huge, or extremely bug-like. It is the ENTIRETY of the Hidden World's second sublayer just because of how GARGANTUAN it is...
it is also the resting place of the S̶̨̖̬̬̪̻̤̩̣͚͆̾̃̈́̃̃̍̀̏̾͒̋͝͝ų̵̢̗͖̼̹̙̘͖͇͆̅͛́͆̈́̏͋ͅͅr̸̢̨̡̛͕̣̬͌̋̓̿͐̐̄̌͊͐̕͘͝͝g̶̛͎͑̂̓̄̐́̃̓̈́͐̾̚͝ḯ̵̧̦̙̺̻̩͐͋̚ͅn̸̢͍͈̘̥̪̫̼̬̭̽̌̑̀̃͛͌̕g̷̨̣͓͔̼̠͈͉͔̃͒͝ ̵̨̡̝̣͈̪͎͙̝̼̩̣͈̻͔̓̆̽͊̈́̌͒̈́̑́̕̚͠Ş̵̬̯̝͎̗͈͕̘̞̟̟̌̂̄̇̂́̎̉͘͜e̶̻̞̿̎͒̿̀̄̈̕r̸̨̤̯̳̖̙̭̳͎̮͇͔̐͌̓̈́̎̎͝͝p̴͉̼̀̏͊̓̌̚͝e̸̙̣͚̲̤̫̲͋̈́̋̎ͅñ̵̩̮̈́́̌̑͛̄̾́̈́͒́̂͠t̸̬̟͚̳͈̺͓̫̗̫̊͛̽̋́͒̿
The realm is chock-full of absurdly huge trees and flowers and grass, and other plant-life, all juiced up to be so huge thanks to the aeroplanktons known as magic.
the Giant Kingdom is home to:
Bewilderbeast
Prismatic Death*
Octofin
Deathgripper
Silkspanner
Deadly Spinner
Deathsong
*It is the general species name for the Red Death's species, individuals would be named after specific colors, IE a Blue Death, Yellow Death, Green Death etc.

Sublayer 3
-
The Fire Kingdom - Muspelheim
the hellscape, the horrors, the volcanic pain. that is what this realm is. it is INHOSPITABLE to anything that doesn't live there.
In the very few places that have plant life in this realm, it is thick and healthy from the nutrients in volcanic ash, and well adapted to tolerate the heat.
Many of the dragons here are tough and hardy and have very high heat tolerances. Some examples of inhabitants:
Ash Howler*
Emberwing*
Gronckle
Hotburple
Monstrous Nightmare
Catastrophic Quaken
Snafflefang
Shovelhelm
Typhoomerang
Threadtail
Singetail
*The Ash Howler and the Emberwing are the renamed Sky Torcher and Flame Thrower respectively
-
The Dark Kingdom - Svartalfheim
The dreariest of all nine realms, the Dark Kingdom is humid, hot, and hard to see in.... it, is, quite peculiarly, sealed off with Deathsong Amber at the mountain boundary between it and the Fire Kingdom.... perhaps it is to keep the S̸̡̧̺̰̦̱̺̱͖̖͖̻͆͒̏̍̔̄͋̌͋̒̕͝ù̴̢̺̭̠̜͍̤͕̤͕͕͍͋̋͝ͅͅņ̷̨̬̦̺̤̹̪͖͎͚̘̗̟̺̾ę̷̆̈̈́̽̉͋̒̂̇̄̍͗͜͝ả̸̮̝̙̳̱̥͓̮͈̼̖̣̍̋̈́́̒̂̈́̚͜͝͝t̷̞͚͍̯͗͛̂͂̈́̄̈̓̏́̆̕̚ͅë̵̢̡̛̬̖̝̗̝̘͙̼͐̿̽̌̉͝͝͠ȑ̵̹͙̳̯̟̿̍́̾̈́̚ sleeping inside from escaping?
the realm's plantlife is very rare, you're more likely to come across the plant-fungus-thing that has "fruits" of sorts that look like glowing eyes, they're edible.... to dragons.
All of said dragons living here are either lovers of the dark and whimsical or can kill you easily in a million different ways.
The realm is inhabited by:
Smothering Smokebreath
Night Terror
Skrill
Slitherwing

The Desert Kingdom - Vanaheim
The deepest of all nine kingdoms, the desert kingdom is a lovely place to be... as long as you don't disturb the Monarchic Deathsongs, peculiar deathsongs that resemble monarch butterflies in coloration that always reside on a pillar made of amber for some reason, it'll be a nice time... if you keep to the oases that is.
It is where the mother of titans, the empress of dragons, Í̵͔͚͍̮̖͖̞̌̓̍̃̏͊́ͅm̵̜͎̙̼̱̩͎͐̇̏́́͛̕p̷̛͙̘̫̰̗͖̆̃̇͌͑̍̃̕͘͝e̸̡̢̛͙̦͍̓̍͂r̵̥̙͕̗͓̥͔̖̰͓̦͉̜̦̋͑̄į̵̤̟̤̙̯̤̞̗͒͐̃̈́͐̇͆̈́̕͜͜͜͠͠ͅó̶̺̺͕̹̬̲̤̦̯̲́̅̓̏͑͊̚ͅs̴̞̄͑ų̷̲̭̫̭̟̞̉̉̾̐̋̄́̿̈́̄͂̎̆̓͂s̷̡̯̭̗͉̠̝͖̍̈̈̃̃̄̈̊̀̓̐̆̅̋͘ rests in her slumber after being nearly slain by a dark-scaled invader bringing in sicknesses from the surface.... but where could she be lying?
this realm is the home to:
Fault Rippers are giant dragons, up to 300 meters in length from the tip of their blazing hot horn to the end of their tail.
They are part of the "monumental class", which among six others was used to describe the various types of dragons during viking times, however, only one of these groupings is considered even close to being taxonomic.
This... titan of a dragon is seemingly almost entirely senseless in its head, it seemingly only feels and hears things.
it has an acute pair of ears with sharp hearing when it's screeches echo back at it, giving it a full 3D image of it's surroundings. Very useful when they enter caves, canyons or other features underground... or when they come across their favorite prey, Whispering Deaths.
Without Fault Rippers, the populations of the earth-eating amphitheres would go out of control and cause the entire hidden world to collapse.
This creature's horn and many spikes are a a scorching hot 3,000 °C, hot enough to melt literal diamonds.
An elderly male individual, un-affectionately nicknamed Tunnelborer, ripped open the Kullersen Fissure, the very place that ICARIS was built upon, during a brawl against a teenage Screaming Death.
ICARIS' director of Geology, Dr. Olivia Kullersen, hates this individual fault ripper for reasons that will remain classified.

The Opening
(You're here!) Part 1 - Opening / Part 2 - What ARE Dragons? / Part 3 - The Hidden World Itself / Part 4 - The Main Dragons / Part 5 - The Main Humans / Part 6 - Story Time
-----
So, as we all know, Dragons: The Nine Realms is DESPISED by the overall HTTYD fandom due to many reasons, but most notably the writing.
and that makes me sad because DT9R could have GENUINELY been a good show, had it been given more time for development.
Heck, even as a fan, I feel like most of the budget went into paying Jeremy Shada and into the soundtrack.
-----
The Nine Realms' story is, in my opinion, an absolute trainwreck. A very fun trainwreck, but a trainwreck nonetheless,
Some examples of it's flawed writing right of the top of my head, at least, are, in my opinion:
Jun's... almost everything, especially towards the end of season 8
Eugene's inability to keep character development
Tom's personality essentially just being about him being hiccup's descendant
The reliance on nostalgia
Ok, really, a noticeable one is how character development, generally just is sent all the way back to square one in every episode.

And uh, finally, here's the "poster" of sorts

If the Hidden World is where all dragons come from.... then shouldn't we know where they very first began?
Well, I intend to answer that.
-----
Aliens.
Dragons are aliens.
Dragonkind originates on a distant moon in another far off star system, as well as a lot of alien "plantlife"
in a world of peculiar life, with six eyes and twelve limbs as their very most ancestral form...
and dragons come from a creature on this little world that essentially just popped out of the water in a geological time-sense...
-
Then, just as the Triassic-Jurassic extinction was over... a Starship full of life to seed worlds.... but alas, a stray space rock hit it...
Bam, clunk, woosh, zoom
it slammed into an odd dried out caldera in the ocean, smashing open a hole in the bottom of the caldera... into a giant cave... the cradle of dragonkind....
The hidden world.
In the crash, many lifeforms on the ship died, except for the alien flora... and one kind of creature...
a small, scaly thing, about the size of a cat, kind of cute, six-eyed, twelve-legged... The Protodraco primigenius
