Cat Wizard Yugi Fic - Chapter One
Summary:
Yugi is a wizard that has the power to turn himself into a cat. Atem finds him one day, thinking he's a stray, and takes him home because he's lonely.
The adorable little cat is so friendly. He purrs a lot, he head bumps him, he lets Atem pet him, he cuddles a lot.
He snuggles against Atem their first night together. Atem wakes up in the middle of the night to find a 20-something young man asleep next to him where the cat was.
And oh no, he's beautiful.
Atem's boots scraped along the cracked sidewalk, the crunching sounds grating to his ears. However, the man was tired and couldn't bring himself to pick up his feet. It was a cloudy afternoon and the wind was bringing a chill to the air. Fall was coming.
He smiled at the thought. This bleak neighborhood would look so much brighter once the fall leaves started to come in.
He tugged his leather jacket closer around himself, but it did little to stave off the cold. He'd have to bring out his big coat soon.
His apartment was an old but large brick building. The red bricks were darkened with age, and most of the black, iron fire escape stairs that zig-zagged along the back were rusted over. But he wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
The owner of the building was a man named Maximillion Pegasus. He kept the rooms inside up-to-date enough to make it comfortable. Atem knew he lived in a large mansion out in the country somewhere, but he visited sometimes. The manager of the place and the one who collected rent was a handsome man named Duke Devlin, who was around Atem's age of 29. He had pitch black hair, and gorgeous, bright green eyes.
They flirted sometimes, but not seriously; Duke was trying to woo a girl named Serenity, and Atem himself wasn't looking for a relationship.
He entered the apartment lobby and breathed a sigh of relief as warmth from the heater washed over him. He ran a hand through his wild hair, trying to fix his wind-blown locks.
The lobby was cozy. It had wood paneling walls, some paintings done by Pegasus himself, a worn couch on the right side of the room by the only window, wood floors, and a nice plush rug in front of the desk. He glanced at the wallflower plug-in as he passed it; it smelled like donuts.
Duke was sitting behind the reception desk as usual, chair tipped back with his socked feet up on the table, reading a magazine. A lock of his raven hair was twisted around a finger while he unconsciously played with it. Atem always found it endearing and cute.
"Good afternoon, Duke," Atem said as he passed the desk.
Duke grinned up at him. "How's it going, Sennen?"
Atem cracked a smile of his own. "Living the dream."
"Is Kaiba still giving you issues at work?"
"When is he not?"
Duke snorted. "Fair. Oh, don't forget to take your trash out. The garbage truck comes tomorrow."
Atem let out a few muttered swear words. "Right. Thanks for reminding me. Have a good evening."
Duke nodded and went back to his magazine. Atem headed toward the elevator doors, the stainless steel reflecting the light of the room.
He pressed the button on the side panel, and thankfully, it opened right away. It had the same wood floor as the lobby, but scuffed from foot traffic.
He checked his phone notifications while the cab went up and up and up, and exited onto the fifth floor a minute later. He stepped out onto cheap carpet with dark green doors lining each side of the hallway. Atem was thankful that he never had any issues with his neighbors. It was always quiet, which made Atem wonder if anyone even lived there despite the name plaque next to the doorbell that read "Valentine."
Atem shoved the apartment door open and sighed happily, glad to be home. He was blessed that he was able to afford to live alone because it gave him freedom to decorate the place to his tastes. Duel Monsters posters decorated the walls, vibrant pictures of the Dark Magician and Summoned Skull greeting him in the entry-a stark contrast to the old, yellowed walls they were hung on.
He tossed his work bag onto the couch and headed into the kitchen. It was small but he didn't need a lot.
He tossed a glance at the few dishes in the sink and decided to ignore it for another night. He instead opened the fridge and saw that he had some leftover sweet and sour chicken from his takeout the night before.
He smiled excitedly. Dinner!
But first he had to take care of the trash.
He stuck the food into the microwave and grabbed his cart from the balcony, which contained three trash bags. He found it was easier to haul trash five stories down if he put into a small cart.
He saw that the sun was starting to set, so Atem swapped out his leather jacket for his heavier one and headed outside.
Upon exiting the glass doors, he realized it had indeed gotten colder. He pulled the hood up on his jacket and rolled his cart to the dirty red dumpster, easily tossing his bags in.
"There, that's done," he muttered. "Now to enjoy my food."
He was in a rush to get inside, but he stopped and listened when he heard a rustling next to the dumpster. It seemed like something was hidden in the tuft of weeds and grass growing from a crack in the pavement.
Probably just a raccoon, he thought, and took another step back toward the apartment.
"Meow!"
He stopped and listened, pretty certain he had heard a cat. There was silence for a few beats and then "Meow!"
A cat? In this cold? That wouldn't do.
He stepped toward the sound and looked around, pushing stray pieces of trash aside with his shoe until he found a fluffy little darling looking up at him with bright eyes.
"Awww," he cooed, smiling at him. "Are you lost, little one?"
"Mrow!"
"I see," he chuckled. "Can I pet you?"
He knelt down and extended a hand, giving him a chance to sniff him. To his surprise, the cat immediately started loving on him, nuzzling his leg and purring. Atem gave him chin scratches and his purring increased in volume.
"You're so cute," he said. The cat had pure white fluff, very short legs, and a poofy tail. Atem thought his eyes looked purple, but he blamed it on the bad lighting since the sun was nearly down.
"You're way too clean and friendly to be a stray," he hummed. He looked around his neck and didn't find a collar.
"Did you escape from your parents?" he asked as the cat climbed onto his lap, demanding cuddles. He laughed and gathered him up in his arms. "Well, I won't leave you out here. I'll look around for posters tomorrow to see if anyone is missing a cat."
He turned to grab his cart and then abruptly hesitated, a thought occurring to him. His apartment didn't allow pets.
Crap.
Well, he wasn't going to leave a friendly cat out in the cold. What was the harm in keeping him for a few days? Surely someone must be looking for him, right?
He lowered the cat into the cart, the little animal becoming obscured by the canvas lining.
"Don't make any noise, okay?"
He kept purring, making no promises.
"Shhh."
The cat blinked up at him and then thankfully settled, starting to clean himself.
Atem walked to the lobby doors and carefully opened it. Duke was still reading his magazine, but Atem knew he'd be going up to his room soon.
Please don't make any noise, please don't make any noise, he begged the cat. He could detect a soft purr, but maybe Duke wouldn't notice.
He wheeled his cart quickly across the room, needing to get to the elevator as fast as he could.
"Hey Sennen!"
Atem froze in place, heart thudding in panic. "Yes?"
His gaze was still on the magazine. "You're not a Leo, are you?"
"N-no?"
"Good. Those guys are screwed this week."
He chuckled nervously and managed to make it to the elevator without further conflict.
The cat was rustling around restlessly by the time he got to his door. He leapt out of the cart right as he locked it behind him.
Good. He didn't need the little guy escaping down the hallway.
"Mrooww mroowww! Mrooww mroowww!" he sang, prancing around the living room.
He smiled. "Damn, you're cute."
"Pbbbrrr!"
"Correct."
Atem reset the microwave while he looked around for some food for the cat. What human food could cats eat?
He sat down at his small kitchen table, gently moving some Duel Monster cards out of the way. and pulled out his phone, looking up a website. The cat was on his lap, purring up a storm and trying to get at his chicken.
"No, no, no," he lightly scolded. He gently brushed him off his lap so he could eat in peace. He looked back down at his phone and tapped on—
The cat was instantly back, jumping up on the table.
Atem laughed. "You little pain. Okay, okay, I'll scrouge something up."
He let out a loud meow that lasted about ten seconds while Atem looked through his fridge. He gave him an amused look and then pulled out a carton of eggs. "You have a lot to say for such a little guy."
Several minutes later, he was munching happily on scrambled eggs. Atem petted him while he ate, the cat's butt arching into the air as Atem's gentle scratches went down his spine.
"You really are adorable. I'd love to keep you. I wonder what your family named you."
He looked at the glowing clock on his oven and saw that it was 8:00. He stood up and stretched, cracking his back.
"Enjoy your food, little one. I'll buy you some cat food tomorrow, okay?"
He looked up at Atem with a steady gaze. Atem blinked, leaning closer. His eyes were indeed purple. What a beautiful little guy.
He took off his gold jewelry and then his clothes, sighing happily. He was looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow because it was a day off. He quickly used a wet wipe to get some of his make-up off and then headed into the bathroom.
He jumped when he saw the cat sitting on the closed toilet lid, staring at him.
"When did you-never mind."
The cat's eyes looked over his body, as if he was appreciating the view.
Well, it wasn't like there anything else to look at. The white tile of his shower walls needed to be cleaned, the edges of his mirror were chipped, the floor had scattered q-tips that missed the trash can, and Duke had told him his Kuriboh shower curtain was an eyesore, but Atem stubbornly refused to replace it.
"It's a piece of art!" he would always say.
"It's a piece of plastic that probably cost about five bucks."
"Six."
The cat was still on the toilet when he stepped out of the shower. He toweled himself off, trying to ignore those purple eyes that were fixated on his chest.
"You're making me feel a bit objectified here," he chuckled. "I feel like I'm at the gym right now."
The cat followed him into his bedroom, fluffy tail held high.
Atem put on some warm sweatpants and a tank top and then collapsed into bed.
Should I play a game toni-
His vision was suddenly full of white fluff as the cat jumped up onto the bed and settled himself next to him.
"Meeeoowww!" he let out happily.
He laughed. "You are so cute!"
He got comfortable in the sheets and turned over, his back to the cat, and quickly drifted off to the sound of purring.
******
His eyes opened when it was still dark outside, with faint light from the streetlights outside filtering in through the blinds. As he slowly came back to earth, he realized his mouth was dry and he desperately needed some water.
Ugh, fine.
He rolled over and his legs brushed up against something warm.
Oh, it must be the cat, he thought. But after several seconds as Atem slowly became more awake, he realized it wasn't the cat.
He shot up in panic and somehow held back a scream.
Right where the cat had been mere hours ago was a young man that looked to be a few years younger than himself. He was curled up and sleeping peacefully, oblivious to Atem's freakout.
Atem shakily turned on a bedside lamp to get a better look at him, and-
-oh no. He was beautiful.
And naked.
(I stole a line from Gilmore Girls because it's one one of my favorites and I'm a Leo).
