Which gives us a conversion rate of 17.5 : 5.3 = 3.3 sons for one Silmaril

The rate observed in nature is about 3 sons to one Silmaril, 3.5 if you count Maglor. (rationale: 6 (or 7) sons died, 2 Silmarils were regained.) Which means that:

to get to 3.3 we need to assume that Maglor is 60% dead and 40% alive. Seems valid.
