CHARLIE your Moomin particles are spreading... do you happen to know where i can read it! or is there a Charlie Approved Way to Get Into Moomin 101 LifeHacks How To Tutorial Not Clickbait or anything of the sort 🦆🙏 ← i can't use my Daffy discord praying emoji here so just pretend
OMGGG ELIZAAA !!! *SHAKES U* THIS IS SO EXCITING
OK so first of all avril-circus made THIS rly great little info graphic abt all moomin franchise content that i think is worth looking at for a starter crash course!!
it is however tragically Not Very Easy to get ahold of a lot of moomin content w/o buying it BUT thats mostly jus me speaking as a physical books enjoyer ITS TOUGH OUT THERE my stupid library keeps lying 2 me that they have moomin books they do not have >:|
BUT they r out there and probably much more accessible digitally.... the comics anthologies are on archive but the quality isnt that great, ive been using this website (im looking at it w adblock on so i apologize for what it may look like w/o adblock) HOWEVER that one only has like the first five volumes so you'll have to go to archive for the rest 👍(there r ten) I THINK THATD BE A GOOD PLACE TO START the comics are rly great and a LOT of fun and u definitely dont have to read them in any sort of order, in fact id recommend reading them out of order cuz the later ones get a lot better (a lot of my favs r from around volumes 4-5)
ALSO !! THE CARTOONS !!! eliza i have very tragic news for u as an Old Things enjoyer...... a lot of the '69 and '72 series are lost media... (esp the 69 series i think theres like a solid 40 episodes that literally no one knows where to find... tragic...) but what is available tends to float around on youtube w/o getting taken down so. AT LEAST THERES THAT. the 90s series is a lot closer to the original books/comics anyway, but once u start to get into it especially since ik u to be a fellow oldhead the 69 and 72 series are worth checking out theyre SO silly !! tove jansson actually hated the 69 series bcz it used a lot of violent (one might say looney-tunes-esque..) slapstick including GUNS which jansson hated... BUT its fun! i think you'd like it despite how not moomin-y it is. the 72 series ("new moomin") was created kind of in response to jansson's criticism, so it leans REAL heavy in the other direction, which also comes across as insanely funny to me. much more quiet and atmospheric, also downright scary sometimes, also hilariously melodramatic at times which i adore. (see: this famous and insane scene) also tragically both of those were never officially subbed in english but theres some fansubs on youtube of the 69 series and the 72 series.
THAT BEING SAID the 90s series is the most popular for good reason, its the most faithful to the books and comics, and also the only one that jansson and her brother (who also helped work on the comics) were actively involved in. the official moomin channel actually has most (or maybe all?) of the episodes that were dubbed in english on youtube, but as you'll probably note from my wording, not all the episodes were dubbed or subbed officially in english. years ago i tried finding the rest of the series fan subbed but i never did find all of it, though im sure its out there somewhere. ALSO speaking of dubs, i do love the english dub, i think john chancer as snufkin has some killer and hilarious line delivery, but im partial to the finnish, swedish, and japanese dubs (in that order, though theyre all good) BUT as far as i know the only language that the whole series has been dubbed in is japanese (and i think maybe finnish?)
ALSO theres ofc the 2019 british 3d animated series. this ones still running !! and its pretty good !! i have a lot of Opinions on it but i think ill reserve those for if u end up actually watching it (or maybe ill just post abt it... i have much 2 say ....)
and as for the books, my fav ones are moominsummer madness (lighthearted an fun book) and moominvalley in november (probably dont start w this one, its incredibly sad) and its here i have to admit that i havent actually read any of the picture books except for "who will comfort toffle?" (FAKE FAN CHARLIE !!) BUT I MEAN if ur interested and can manage to find em theyre all pretty easy to get through! despite all the depth and intellect i insist they have they are still ultimately books for children. i can't find literally any of them online atm, i think when i first read them i just had to borrow them digitally from my local libraries, so hopefully thats an option for you?? I WISH I COULD HELP U OUT HERE but like i said they can b elusive...
also some stuff thats like... not directly moomin related but i consider 2 be like Moomin Extra Credit is the 2020 documentary "tove" (i watched this on the bbc website by changing my vpn to the uk lol) and the book "letters from tove" (very important snufkin lore in there.... also tragically i have no idea how you might get this i got incredibly lucky that my local library had a temporary program going where u could request a book they didnt have once a month and theyd buy it brand new but for the most part i wouldnt expect a regular library to carry it so. GOODLUCK SORRY TO BE RECOMMENDING THINGS I CANT HELP U ACQUIRE :,) also this interview abt queer themes in tove janssons work !
