Dudleya cymosa ssp. pumila 'Mt. Baldy'

Dudleya cymosa is one of the most wide-ranging and variable species in the genus, with many subspecies and flower colors. This one is the Mt. Baldy form of D. cymosa ssp, pumila, which comes from the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles. The color combination on the flowers is incredible - yellow-orange on the inside, and red with white stripes on the outside. Superb!

Dudleya cymosa subspecies paniculata

Dudleya cymosa occurs in a wide variety of habitats in central and southern California, and it is quite variable in size and in flower color. It has several named subspecies, and one of these is D. cymosa ssp. paniculata, known as the Diablo Range Dudleya. It occurs on Mt. Diablo (just a few miles from the Ruth Bancroft Garden), and to the south on Mt. Hamilton and southward through San Benito County. It generally has pale yellow flowers, but these may be greenish-yellow (as seen here) or almost white. In addition to flower color, this subspecies stands out for the way its flower stalks branch and re-branch.

i went hiking the other day and found a hillside covered in the biggest dudleyas i’ve ever seen (!!!) in the wild. i had to climbs through the dead branches of some Prunus to get to it and got sticks in my shoes but it was so worth it 😌
