German People Crazy

I'm serious. Y'all love compound words. Today was my first day of my sophomore (10th grade) year and I signed up for German 1 (Duetsch 1) because I wanted to learn German. Good reason, right? Well my German teacher, Mr. Trinkaus (silent a), was raised in Germany (Duetschland) but was taught both English and German growing up. So we wrote this 79-letter-word on the board. The word: Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänvertretergattinnenvereinsbuchhalterin. (REALLY AUTOCORRECT!? NO RED LINE!? YOU KNOW THIS WORD!?) So for the majority of the class we went over the normal 1st day stuff. Rules and expectations, what we'll be doing, etc. Well at the end of the class we went over the word. There's 5 kids in my class, including myself. One was already sent out at the beginning of the period so there were just 4 today. Two of us (a guy in the class and me) would write the meaning of each part of the word on the board while the other two looked up the meaning of each part. So we started at the end of the word. 1.) "buchhalter" = "accountant". 2.) Then he told them to add the 'in'. "buchhalterin" = "female account". 3.) "verein" = "club" 4.) "gattinnen" (ignore the 'nen' on the end) = "wife" 5.) "vertreter" = "deputy" 6.) "kapitän" = "captain" (that one was pretty obvious to us) 7.) "gesellschafts" = "company"/"corporation" 8.) "fahrts" = "journey" 9.) "schiff" = "ship" (also relatively easy) 10.) "dampf" = "steam" And 11.) "Donau" = "river" This word. This one word. Literally means: A female accountants' club for the wives of a captain's deputy who (the captain and deputy) work on a corporation's steam ship on a trip on a river. Why!? Like just why!? Is this a common topic or something? Is it so common that they decided that it should all be one compound word? I'm so legitimately confused. I thought English was weird (it is). Like we got certain stuff you have to do in order to make something clear but these people got an entire topic sentence in one word. I think the word would be shorter in English too. Riversteamshipjourneycorporationcaptaindeputywifeclubfemaleaccountant. And it makes more sense (to me anyway.)
