I've Never been a great fan of Edward VIII. But the Duke had great style sporting and formal. When I saw these Glorious 1920s tartan jodhpurs at Spitalfields yesterday made by Hawkes & Co I nearly fainted and it also reminded me where I've seen such jodhpurs before. Sadly, as you can see in the picture they were miles too big and shouldn't be altered that much. I broke my heart to leave them because I would have bought them in a heartbeat. David Prince of Wales did not like to attend marriages, especially the aristocrats ones: he always ended up feeling sorry for the two persons involved, he used to say. When they suggested David that Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark would be an excellent choice of wife, David declined the idea. Marina indeed looked like the Prince's taste: tall, slim, glamorous, independent. But David just could not accept the idea of an arranged marriage: if he had to, he would marry who he loved. George of Kent surprised everyone saying that he actually would marry her. He already eyed Marina and managed to won her interest, surprising her with stuff like suddenly flying to the place she was, in order to see her. As soon as David knew about the news, he ironically commented: "I see George was faster than me. I will come to the marriage, but will feel sorry for both." King Edward VIII was born . . ◼ Edward was born on 23 June 1894 at White Lodge, Richmond Park, on the outskirts of London, during the reign of his great-grandmother Queen Victoria. . ◼ He was the eldest son of the Duke & Duchess of York (later King George V & Queen Mary). His father was the son of the Prince & Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII & Queen Alexandra). His mother was the eldest daughter of the Duke & Duchess of Teck. . ◼ At the time of his birth, he was third in the line of succession to the throne, behind his grandfather & father. . ◼ As a great-grandson of the monarch in the male line, Edward was styled His Highness Prince Edward of York at birth. . ◼ He was baptised Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David in the Green Drawing Room of White Lodge on 16 July 1894. The names were chosen in honour of Edward's late uncle, who was known to his family as "Eddy" or Edward, & his great-grandfather King Christian IX of Denmark.
