Two months earlier

“Rule one,” Nesta says, filling a glass of water instead of looking at him. “No sleepovers.”

Cassian leans against her kitchen counter, his shirt half unbuttoned, his hair a mess from her fingers. “Okay.”

“Rule two: no dates. This isn’t—we’re not doing that.”

“Got it.”

She finally meets his eyes, because she needs him to understand. “Rule three: if either of us catches feelings, we end it. Clean break.”

Something flickers across his face, gone too quickly to read. “Makes sense.”

“Good.” She crosses her arms. “So we’re clear?”

“Crystal.”

Present

She’s already on the edge when he pins her wrists above her head.

“Look at me,” he demands, and she obeys, meeting those hazel eyes gone dark with want. He rocks into her slowly, deliberately, watching her come apart beneath him. “That’s it, sweetheart. God, you’re so—”

She cuts him off with a desperate kiss, unable to stifle the whine climbing up her throat. He releases her wrists to grip her hips instead, angling her exactly where he needs her. The new position makes her cry out.

“Fuck, Cass—right there—”

“I know.” His voice is wrecked. “I know exactly what you need.”

She can’t even deny it anymore. He knows she likes it when he talks to her, when he pins her down, when he goes slow until she’s begging and then gives her everything fast and hard and perfect. He’s made an art of making her lose control completely.

Nesta wraps her legs around him, nails raking down his back as he drives deeper. The headboard slams against the wall, and she thinks briefly about his neighbors until she realizes she couldn’t care less. He’s what’s important, and nothing can stop her from losing herself in the slide of their sweat-slicked skin, the obscene sounds of their bodies meeting, and the way he groans her name like a plea when she clenches around him.

“Nes, sweetheart,” he murmurs against her throat, voice wrecked. “Please, let me feel you.”

She shatters. He follows moments later with a ragged curse, face buried in her neck, holding her like she’s the only solid thing in a spinning, tumbling world. They lie together in the aftermath, both spent and breathing hard. Cassian presses lazy kisses to her shoulder and traces patterns on her hip with his thumb. She should leave. It’s part of the routine. Get dressed, call a car, maintain the boundaries.

Instead she curls into his chest. She tells herself it’s just for a minute. His heartbeat is steady beneath her ear. His arm comes around her, warm and secure.

Just for a minute.

She wakes at 3 AM with his arm still around her waist.

It takes her a moment to realize what’s happening, but when she does, she’s hit square in the chest with blinding panic. Because she fell asleep, in his bed, in his arms. And worst of all, she doesn’t want to leave.

She doesn’t want to leave, because she memorized his coffee order. She knows he wears his mother’s ring on a chain around his neck, taking it off before working out but keeping it in his left pocket, always. She knows he reads the sports section before anything else and hates fennel and laughs with his whole body when he finds something really funny.

She knows the exact ratio of gold to green in his eyes when he looks at her.

Oh god.

She sits up carefully. His arm slides away and the loss of it aches.

“Nes?” His voice is rough with sleep. He reaches for her in the dark. “You okay?”

“I have to go.”

“It’s the middle of the night.”

“I know. I just—” Her throat closes. “We have rules, Cass.”

She’s met with silence. Then he sits up too and turns on the lamp. The warm light catches his face and she can see a myriad of emotions crossing it, the most prominent being concern.

“Which one?” he asks quietly.

“Three.”

He goes very still. “Yeah?”

She can’t look at him. “I can’t do this anymore.”

“Okay.” His voice is steady but she hears the fracture beneath. She knows him well enough to hear the subtle change. “Clean break, like you said.”

“No—” The word bursts out of her, the panic suddenly changing shape at the possibility of losing this, losing him. “No, I mean I can’t do casual. Not with you.” She forces herself to meet his eyes. “I want more and I know that’s not what we agreed but I—”

He kisses her, soft and sure, cutting off her ramble.

“Thank god,” he breathes against her lips. “I broke rule three about two days in, sweetheart.”

Her laugh is half a sob. “You were supposed to tell me.”

“Yeah well.” He pulls her into his lap, wrapping around her like he’s been waiting to hold her exactly like this. “New rule, Nes: no more rules.”

She buries her face in his neck. “Agreed.”

If it’s true they have a kid together, he’s screwed, and if it’s not, he’s still screwed because he put her on display as if she were pregnant for the whole world to see. That was, without a doubt, the most ridiculous role he’s ever played. Like it or not, she’s now permanently tied to his image, which was exactly the point of this alleged pregnancy storyline. He got himself into a massive mess by dragging out the whole shitshow and going along with putting this supposed pregnancy on display for the world, he was clearly the only one who ended up paying the price, which seems to have been the plan all along. That was the plan against him from the very start. He doesn't want to be controlled and be on leash just like any other Hollywood actors? Fine, let's put a permanent smudge on his image. Hell hath no fury like two women with a petty scorn for the man who rejected them both. So, where has that shared scorn landed them today? One is sprinting to outrun a mountain of debt and the looming shadow of her own irrelevancy. The other is trapped in a loop endlessly proving she bore a child and engaged to a man who clearly loathed her and no job on sight. What a waste of time.
