Dust Commander (1970 Kentucky Derby)
No idea why I forgot to place a title.
Anyways I’d like to collate as much pictures of 1970 Kentucky Derby winner Dust Commander in this post. Because I literally changed my whole account layout for this funni horse. Uhhh according to Wikipedia he won 8 of 42 races. His major wins are the Bluegrass Stakes and Kentucky Derby. I know he’s kinda ass compared to other horses because apparently the 1970 generation is unremarkable but I’m still gonna be the number 1 Dust Commander fan because… honestly idk really maybe it’s a hyperfixation
Dust Commander was never president of the United States.
Superstitions: Dust Commander
As eventual winner Dust Commander was putting in his final preparations for his Kentucky Derby run, his owner Robert Lehman was hoping he could call upon some “divine assistance”. So he called up a friend of his, a priest, that he met on a plane; Emmanuel Milingo.
Milingo , a Roman Catholic archbishop from Zambia arrived in the Keeneland paddock (dressed in full frock) to bless Dust Commander in a small ceremony.
According to an official history printed with Churchill Downs, Milingo was troubled by a feeling of nervousness and dread surrounding the Derby. He told Lehman that he thought “a dark cloud” revolved around “the number four horse.”
So you could imagine Lehman’s surprise when Holy Land clipped heels with another horse and had fallen on the track.
Holy Land wore a saddle cloth with the number four printed on it.
