Bandcamp are waiving commissions for all online purchases. Given how much of an impact the lack of work will have on people involved in the arts, do go and have a nosy because there are some truly amazing albums available there.
I’d like to recommend a few and cannot sing their praises highly enough:
Life & I by Dusty Limits and Michael Roulston
A beautiful, satirical cynical look at life featuring songs about life, death and everything in between. Dusty has the most fantastic vocals, while Michael’s work on the music is just fantastic.
My favourite song on this album is Heaven or Hell (Or Highgate) - an atheist’s musing on what happens in the afterlife.
Also, have a dig through some of Michael Roulston’s catalogue, because he co-writes some of the most phenomenal modern cabaret satire. Songs for Cynics is a brilliant and hilarious double-act album with him and Sarah-Louise Young featuring songs like “Please Don’t Hand Me Your Baby” and “I Fancy Your Father”.
Both of The Amazing Devil’s albums
Love Run
The Horror and the Wild
For those who are unfamiliar, Joey Batey - aka Jaskier in The Witcher - is a legit folk musician and along with Madeleine Hyland creates the melancholy furious feral music of The Amazing Devil. Their lyrical gymnastics are pure wild poetry and honestly, I have listened to them all more times than you can imagine.
Favourite songs off each album are Pray (Love Run) which has the fantastic lyric:
God made all man in his image Honey I’m I’m I’m no man I’m what’s left when children go to war
And Farewell Wanderlust from THaTW for its pure primal beauty and lines like:
Goodbye to all my darkness, there’s nothing here but light Adieu to all the faceless things that sleep with me at night This here isn’t make up, it’s a porcelain tomb This here is not singing, I’m just screaming in tune
Give them a try! They’re all worth every penny :)
