Since I was outside working today anyway I took my phone with me and I braved the icy wilds of the goat paddock in order to get pictures. As you can see my herd has grown a little bit and everyone is doing very well. In fact they're looking a little chonky. I tend to err on the side of more rather than less feed because well fed animals have a much easier time staying warm. I'm really looking forward to spring when there will be fresh forage for these guys. Lucy-fur and her boys have officially been moved to their summer home. As is par for the course the boys are not a fan of the moving process. They resisted as much as they possibly could until we were about halfway down the hill and then they realized where we were going and they dragged me the rest of the way. They spent the morning happily devouring violets and fresh spring grass. They've been spending the afternoon hanging out in their shelter thinking happy goaties thoughts. Tomorrow they'll get up and do it all over again, because they are happy little goaties. Happy healthy goats are the very first step to making delicious homemade goat cheese. This enclosure is much larger than the one they were in but I had to wait until it was dry enough for little goat feet. The back pasture tends to be a tad swampy and that's not good for goats. If I fits, I sits - goat edition Of course it's Hazel. She's probably stuffed her sister hope in there for cushioning. Lately if a goat has done something naughty it's Hazel She's the one who got her head stuck in a bucket then ran blindly until she could be caught and the bucket removed. She's the one who leaves tiny muddy hoof marks on my butt every night. She's the one who dumps her food bowl while staring you down every morning. She chews clothing too. She escaped the electric fence. She dismantled the chicken feeder and ate the chicken feed. She knocks her full food bowl right out of my hands if I'm even slightly distracted. She also chases poor little Gladys. I'm sure you've guessed by now that she's rotten to the core, and also my favorite. Don't tell her though, she's already bad enough. Goat selfies! I don't post nearly enough pictures of these beautiful ladies because honestly they're a handful and I like my phone. So I had John take pics. They would have a much harder time accidentally knocking him on his butt and eating his phone. After a rough first day I can honestly say that Lucy is getting friendlier and easier to manage. She has a fondness for horse treats and being scritched under her horns. She does not like the milking machine or mornings which is why I milk by hand. Hazel and Hope are as usual adorable and sweet, they love stomping on anything that makes noise, running through the birds, and licking the salt off of John's legs. Oh and food, they love food and scritches. Meet Lucy Lucy is a dwarf Nigerian with enough goatitude to make anyone proud. She's a handful y'all but she's mine and I couldn't be happier. I have literally been wanting dairy goats for years. It's taken a lot of planning and work to get to this point. She's got two little doelings who are about two months old and so cute I nearly can't stand it. These two are not yet named and I'm having a hard time thinking of names for them. I'm hoping for some good suggestions though. Best of all Lucy is still in milk which is a huge bonus. I had intended to raise a couple of does and have milk at some point in the future. I've never actually milked a goat (or anything else for that matter) so this should be fun. It looks like I'm going to need to figure it out right quick. But once I do there's all kinds of dairy goodness in my future. I'll be posting about it while I learn how to make my own cheese, yogurt, and butter. Wish me luck.
