Dancing with the Stars Rewatch: Season 1 Week 4
Okay. My bad y’all. I was super busy this weekend and just got around to doing this. This week was the week I was most looking forward to during for this season. My favorite dance of the season is this week. Everyone is doing a samba as their individual dance and then the group dance is a Viennese waltz. So let’s just get this started.
Joey and Ashly- Samba (My Score=7, Judges’ Scores=20)- I think this dance was slightly better than his jive from the previous week. He lacked some rhythm and grace. His hips were a little stiff. And the technique wasn’t as good as it could have been. But his performance was a lot better than it ever has been. So it was an improvement to me.
Rachel and Jonathan- Samba (My Score=8, Judges’ Scores=25)- As far as technique goes, Rachel is definitely the strongest contestant of the season. There are a few issues that keep me from completely loving her dances, especially this week. The first was that Jonathan’s choreography was very bland. Even looking at it with season 1 goggles, it was just boring. The second issue is that she moves too gingerly. While her technique is really good and is incredibly precise, she is overly cautious. I want her to really go for it. It would give her dances the strength that they lack. She can do it. She just didn’t have faith in herself. Which brings me to my third issue. She is still not comfortable performing. While I get being shy and being unsure of herself (I’m the king of that lol), it really hurt her dances from a performance point of view. Someone as gifted as her, should be better at owning the stage. This makes the All-Star season so much more frustrating for me. Rachel was a perfect candidate for the show. Ugh. If she had had a better grasp on the last two issues, she would have had a 9 from me. Easily. It is also unfortunate that she was eliminated this week. I don’t think it was deserved, but I understand it.
John and Charlotte- Samba (My Score=6, Judges’ Scores=21)- John will always give a good performance. That much is a given. However, I had to agree with Bruno and Carrie Ann about his dance. His footwork was messy. He was heavy footed. He did a lot of stomping. And his musicality was off. Everyone usually has an off night. This just happened to be his.
Kelly and Alec- Samba (My Score=9, Judges’ Scores=26)- This was the dance I was most looking forward to. I absolutely love this dance. Kelly improved immensely from week 1 to now. And strangely, I think the wardrobe malfunction really helped. She started out good, but kicked it into overdrive after the strap snapped. The spins were good. Her arms were mostly under control. Her technique was really clean. And she went out there and performed the hell outta that dance.
Group Viennese Waltz- So since this isn’t scored, I’m going to give a few thoughts about what I saw. First of all, I miss these kinds of group dances. Kelly was much improved and I think her solo was my favorite. It was so surprising seeing a similar dance (waltz vs. Viennese waltz) and seeing the amount of growth in such a short amount of time. John was really strong here. Rachel wasn’t as good as she usually is. But it was still good. I just wanted her to fix her frame. And Joey was a mess.
My Rankings and Scores Out of 30:
1. Kelly and Alec- 26 2. Rachel and Jonathan- 25 3. Joey and Ashly- 21 4. John and Charlotte- 20
So John and Rachel were in the bottom 2. And as I said earlier in the post, Rachel was sent home. Next week, the top 3 do a foxtrot and a paso. I remember really enjoying Kelly’s paso so hopefully I still love it. We’re almost done with this season. This six weeks went by quick. But other than all of that, let me know what you all thought and I will see you all for week 5 on Saturday.
