Dancing with the Stars Season 1 Rewatch: Episode 1
So first off, I kinda forgot about Lisa Canning. It’s weird to see a much younger Tom, Len, Bruno and Carrie Ann. Louis has long hair. We still have Jonathan, Alec and Edyta. Ashly’s last name is still DelGrosso. And this is Charlotte’s first and only appearance as a competing pro. Also I miss the opening sequence and watching the couples walk down the stairs. I will forever prefer that to the repetitive opening dances that are usually duds.
Something to keep in mind: I’m gonna be quite a bit easier on the celebs in the first two seasons because no one really knew exactly how to make this work.
Joey McIntyre and Ashly- Cha-cha (My score=6; Judges’ Score=20)- This is the first ever dance on DWTS. This was much better than I was expecting. Joey is someone that I would’ve loved to see in the All-Star season. I think he would’ve done very well. He has rhythm and he has style. He needs to work on his arms, posture and he was a bit heavy footed at times. But, his technique was decent and it was probably the best way they could have started the show that is DWTS.
Rachel Hunter and Jonathan- Waltz (My score=7, Judges’ Score=20)- This was a very very pretty dance. Rachel is someone who may have done really well in the All-Star season too. She definitely set the tone for models like Brooke who were actually really good dancers. I would like for her frame to be better and want her to be more confident in her movements. But her lines were gorgeous and I thought her technique was decent.
Evander Holyfield and Edyta- Cha-cha (My score=5, Judges’ Score=18)- It was a fun dance. That’s for sure. Evander was grooving and remembered everything. However, he was heavy footed and his shoulders raised so high that his neck disappeared. But again, he was having fun and it was a joy to watch. I gave it a 5, not because I thought it was bad, but because there were a bunch of problems that I feel like he could actually improve on. SN: I hate the way that Lisa said Edyta’s name. Whew.
Kelly Monaco and Alec- Waltz (My Score=5, Judges’ Score=13)- Kelly is a fighter, I’ll tell you that. The issue here was a lack of confidence. Kelly did everything that she needed to and did it decently well, but she was so incredibly nervous that everything was unsteady. I also think that she wasn’t comfortable with Alec at this point. The performance aspect was completely missing. It wasn’t that bad though. Her frame and carriage was better than Rachel’s. And the spins were decent given her equilibrium troubles (I remember her being very strong with those in the All-Star season even though spotting them was the issue).
John O’Hurley and Charlotte- Cha-cha (My Score=7, Judges’ Score=20)- Fyi, I don’t like John. So that may seep into my actual critique of him just a tad. He did a good job though. He’s definitely a performer and was probably the most at ease on the dancefloor. I do think his technique still needs work though. His torso was also stiff. Rachel could use some of his performance ability and he could use some of her technique.
Trista Sutter and Louis- Waltz (My Score=6, Judges’ Scores=18)- That was a nice dance. It was competent. Trista was on time and did everything pretty okay. There were some questionable moments with the choreography that made things kinda rocky. She clipped her lines a few times and she moved really small. But there’s potential there. I’ll let the cheesy smile pass this time around.
My Rankings and My Score Out of 30:
1. Rachel and Jonathan- 21 2. John and Charlotte- 20 3. Trista and Louis/Joey and Ashly- 18 4. Evander and Edyta/Kelly and Alec-14
So there it is. My first rewatch of DWTS. I actually don’t think I was super easy on anyone. No one was a trainwreck and no one was an outright awful dancer. Let me know your thoughts and we’ll be back, same time-ish, same place next weekend!
Dancing with the Stars Season 1 Rewatch: Week 2
So just to let you all know, these will be up either Saturday or Sunday. It just depends on how busy my Saturday is. This will be one of the Sunday ones since I had school today (smh).
Anyway, we’re back for week 2. I’m not gonna do too much commenting on the setup of the season now. I’ll just focus mostly on the dances unless something big pops up.
Rachel and Jonathan- Rumba (My Score=7, Judges’ Scores=24)- Yeah, Rachel is a good dancer and would have been perfect for the All-Star season. Now as far as the dance goes, it started out a little rough. The first 10 seconds, she was really in here head. But then, she let it all go and really settled into the dance. I thought the hip action was nice. The flexibility was great. She was a little disconnected at times and I would have loved to see more fluidity in her arms, but it was a good dance.
Joey and Ashly- Quickstep (My Score=6, Judges’ Scores=21)- Mm. I actually thought last week’s dance was better. Joey seemed to forget some of the choreography. His posture was bad. He needed to tuck his butt in. And it got really wild from time to time. It was fun but I just wanted better technique. The footwork looked decent-ish though.
Trista and Louis- Rumba (My Score=7, Judges’ Scores=19)- So of the first three couples, I think Trista felt the most comfortable. She was loose and did everything the way that she was supposed to. I thought she was fluid and her hips were good. There was some nice leg action. Sure there could have been more chemistry, but in week 2, that’s the least of my worries. It’s been my favorite routine thus far. So I think they were scored a tad bit low. Unfortunately though, this was their last dance on the show. She had a ton of dance talent and potential and we never got to see it fully realized. SN: Louis can choreograph a really good rumba.
John and Charlotte- Quickstep (My Score=7, Judges’ Scores=26)- John is definitely a performer. That’s for sure. And I think that he’s the strongest contestant as of now. His hold and posture were great. I think the 9s and 8s were way too high though. I think he needed more heel leads. But, it was better than his cha-cha. And I was able to watch it and not think about how badly I dislike him.
Kelly and Alec- Rumba (My Score=6, Judges’ Scores=17)- Kelly was much better this week. She was more at ease and her chemistry with Alec was the best of the night, by far. I forgot how strange her arms are though. And when she was dancing, the technique was rough. But I liked her hip action. The solo parts were a great touch and probably helped her feel more confident and comfortable. And I like that she really went for it.
Evander and Edyta- Quickstep (My Score=4, Judges’ Scores=14)- This was not good. His footwork was bad. He forgot things. His posture was off. It was just bad. The quickstep was just not his dance. His charm from his cha-cha even seemed squandered by the dance.
My Rankings and Scores Out of 30:
1. John and Charlotte- 22 2. Rachel and Jonathan and Trista and Louis- 20 4. Joey and Ashly- 17 5. Kelly and Alec- 16 6. Evander and Edyta- 13
So that was it. I thought the judges’ scores were a bit all over the place for the second week. And they were much harder in season 1 than they are in season 27. That’s all bad. Anyway, Trista and Louis were eliminated. And Rachel and Jonathan were in the bottom 2 with them. There was nothing else to really say about the week of competition. Let me know what you all thought though and I will see you again for week 3 of season 1, next weekend!
