Dyckia brevifolia

Dyckia is a genus of bromeliads native to the southeastern part of South America. They are terrestrial, growing in the ground rather than in trees as many bromeliads do. All species in the genus have flowers in the yellow-to-orange range, and this one is decidedly yellow, with the flowers looking like outward-facing funnels. As can be seen in the upper photo, the plant adds heads over time to make a large clump. Native to southern Brasil.

Added the two other planters on the third level patio today. Now all of my collection is back on display and in full sun. Picked up a few new Opuntia, a dyckia and some succulent filler, too.

The first planters got a bit sunburnt earlier this spring, but they’ve recovered fairly well. Hoping the new ones will do better as they’ve been outdoors for two months already!

Danger plant has a danger baby! Two, actually, but the other offset is smaller and still tucked completely away under the parent plant’s leaves. There may be another, but it’s kind of dark under there and for perhaps obvious reasons I am not going around lifting leaves to peer beneath.

I am fearful of the day I need to repot this beast; I have sliced my fingers on those sharp hook tips through being careless, but I think my leather work gloves will be sturdy enough for the task.
