3 (Technically 4) Favorite Indie Books
Honestly I have 3 (technically 4) favorite Indie books of all time, only one is still going (or two).
1) Dynamo 5 over at Image comics-defunct. The 5 illegitimate half children of Captain Dynamo a Superman/Martian Manhunter esque hero defending their father’s home city after being thrust into it by his widowed wife. Last published in 2010.
2) Edison Rex, originally Monkey Brain Comics, now published (sort of) as a webcomic. A Lex Luthor esque villain discovers he was right about his Superman being a villain. A story built on perceptions and redemption and more broadly the concept of where do you go in life when you finally win, become the hero you always wanted to be, but no one really trusts you?
Ran from 2012-2016 with a two year break between its 16th an 17th issues. 18 issues in total. Digital first and the first 12 issues were put into two trades.
Currently as a webcomic it’s slowly releasing its already made issues. Supposedly when it catches up (which will be a VERY long time away) more new material will be made. I’ve absolutely loved the story. Very Silver Age and referential while also being modern and just plain fun.
3/4) Princeless and Raven; The Pirate Princess. Two very fun books set in the same universe.
Princeless is all about Princess Adrienne Ashe who’s the middlest of 7 sisters. Set in a story that purposefully twists many fairy tale concepts, her being a Black Princess as one example, she seeks to free her sisters from towers (as she does to herself) to let them choose what they want to do, becoming a Knight of sorts. Launched in 2011 and currently at 6 volumes of main story and I believe one volume of short stories (I might be mistaken here?) set in the universe but not directly dealing with the story.
Its spin off (spinning out of the 3rd volume of the Princeless book) all focuses on Raven Xingtao the Pirate Princess/The Black Arrow who’s aimed at taking back her family inheritance from her brothers. Love! Romance! BEATING ENEMIES UP! Assembling an all female Pirate crew Raven gets to kick butt all while in a love triangle with two other members of her all lady pirate crew. Super LGBT friendly. Currently 3 full volumes with the 4th currently underway.
Myriad from Dynamo 5
Gushing on Comics
To anyone who hasn’t read Dynamo 5, please do so.
It’s a great little gem of an indie book about a team of five people who find out they are all the children of this one hero who slept around named Captain Dynamo and they’ve each inherited one of his powers: strength, flight, laser vision, telepathy and shape-shifting. Basically, instead of ONE hero with all these powers, it’s all of those powers spread across five different people who have to learn to get along, all while they are lead by Dynamo’s widow (the Lois Lane to Dynamo’s Superman, if you will). It’s a really fun read with pretty smart writing, snappy dialogue and interesting characters. Especially Scrap, the team’s super-strong member; she’s my favorite.
And I love the designs of the team costumes (even if Scrap’s costume is admittedly kinda typical of female superhero design). I’m not usually big on superhero teams with matching costumes, since I find it isn’t as visually interesting in my opinion, but D5′s costumes not only have a nice blue and red colour scheme, but they find a nice way to mix up the design of the costumes for each character; changing details based on their power set and playing around with the patterns on each so they aren’t all just wearing the same pattern....even if the design of the “5″ looks like they are advertising 5 Gum.
But yeah, if you can, go and pick up the first trade; it’s a good read and if you’re like me and on the look out for heroes outside of the big two publishers, you won’t be disappointed. I would love to one day get a Dynamo 5 movie someday, since honestly, more comic book movies could benefit from having more unique and ambitious premises than “let’s have these two guys fight” or “let’s fight THIS villain who hasn’t been adapted yet.”
