i think my shame of being autistic is closely entwined with my shame of being too childish/not adult enough/not a real adult. i think as a child i really believed that everything would get better when i grew up & i kind of lumped my autistic symptoms and shame into that category.

but surprise! those things are not just child things. my dad was autistic (and very terrible and very abusive, so don’t feel pity for him here) & he would have frequent meltdowns when i was growing up. i remember my mother (not autistic) yelling at him and picking at him and telling him to stop being such a child. i think about that phrasing in particular (and the acute disgust in her voice) whenever i start feeling too overwhelmed or in sensory hell. like everyone is going to think that i am being a baby & that im not trying hard enough. so i have to keep it together.
