Angsty thought that’s been running through my head for a while now… Just player being a dumbass
It had been several weeks with the chain, you really loved this group, you watched them every day act like brothers. Always ready to protect a successor or predecessor, you found that awfully kind and even cute.
But you were an overthinker…
You did not want to be a reason they suffered when you returned home.
So you didn’t blend into the chain. You always walked behind, always kept your distance and always kept so quiet sometimes they forgot you were even there and forgot to give you dinner. You acted as if they were a bother.
And they returned the sentiment.
“Thanks” You muttered when Wild passed you a bowl of soup for dinner —you acted rude but you had manners— which he answered with a huff.
You were sitting on a rock outside the circle they gathered in around the fire. Wind was telling a story, which the others had already heard, but the teen’s enthusiasm made them feel like they could listen to it a thousand times more.
“Ugh, kid, don’t you think you talk too much? it’s like the third time you tell that exact story” It hurt you and you knew it would hurt Wind too. But this was just your life now.
“Shut up, you are not even listening.” Wars argued while Wind had your back facing you, but you knew was now lowering his head.
You huffed, acting annoyed. “Of course I’m not listening, it’s a dumb story, get over it”
“Why are you like this?!” Twi joined in, standing up, a hand on the sailor’s shoulder.
“So you’ll kick me away, that way I won’t be forced to stand you every day.” You begin sarcastically “As far as I know, you are keeping me here against my will just because you’re afraid some lizard may get information about you from me. That’s the dumbest reason I’ve ever heard!” Even if it happened, you’d take that information to the grave, you wouldn’t put them in such a risk.
“Enough! Twilight, sit down! Warriors calm yourself! [name] shut. the fuck. up. and Wind, please continue.” Time yelled before softening and encouraging the sailor. No one dared to point out the usual ‘Language!’ even he sometimes received.
“Nah, I guess you’ve indeed heard it a lot of times” came the sailor’s voice quietly.
You could feel the glare of the entire Spirit of Courage and the Fierce Deity on your neck as you huffed and went to lay down in the captain’s bedroll, not even finishing your meal, you didn’t deserve it.
You also didn’t feel like you deserved the bedroll but, until they could get you a bedroll of your own, they decided that you couldn’t sleep on the floor, so they let you sleep on the bedroll of the person who’ll take the first watch, and when they finish it, they can sleep in the empty bedroll when they wake the next hero up. So the warrior had first watch tonight. They didn’t like you, but they were still heroes and good people who didn’t wish bad on anyone.
You admired that of them. Another thing you didn’t deserve.
Later that night, you couldn’t sleep, but stayed in the bedroll as you tried to. You heard shuffling behind you and light footsteps head some direction.
“Hey wars.” You heard Wind’s murmur.
“Hey, li’l brother, can’t sleep?” answered the oldest.
There was silence for a few moments before you heard the youngest’s voice again. “Am I really that annoying?” The question was so quiet you almost didn’t hear it. Your heart shattered.
“No!” Warriors whisper-shouted “Your stories are amazing and… look, your enthusiasm makes them even better, I feel like I could hear them tons of times. Don’t listen to what that jealous jerk says” Okay, you deserved that.
“hm…” Was the only answer you heard.
“Speaking of, since you can’t sleep, why don’t you finish it for me?” The captain offered softly.
You listened the entire rest of the story (again. You liked it anyways), your heart squeezing even more as you heard Wind gradually speak more excitedly. Then you heard Wind go back to sleep and you let your own eyes fall shut finally on their own.
You apologized deeply. Only in your soul.
You let yourself finally fall asleep, trying to convince yourself that tomorrow would be another day.
