We Were Liars by E. Lockhart My rating: 3 of 5 stars We were liars is the kind of book that’s only worth reading because of the ending. Going into this book I had high expectations, but still expected to be disappointed. If nothing completely mind-blowing would happen I would happen I would tear the book to shreds. Luckily, that did happen. The plot-twist at the end made me recall several details from the rest of the book, which makes you feel like you just read a masterpiece, even though while reading it, it wasn’t that enjoyable at all. I personally didn’t like the characters (except Johnny), execution of messages, or romance, but I didn’t really expect to either. I picked it up as a light summer read and that’s what I got, even though the author tries to pretend that it isn’t by incorporating blatant and cliché messages and a special writing style. I’m not really a fan of the style, especially not because she emphasized that the style was different and unique on the first page of the book by literally saying that it was, still I do think that it wasn’t a deal breaker and some people might really enjoy it. I’m happy that I read it, but I don’t think it deserves the hype that it got initially. View all my reviews
We Were Liars by E.Lockhart - Spoilers!
I must admit I was hooked from the title alone. I wanted to know what they were lying about, who they were lying too and who these characters were and the reason behind the lie. The book is quite short but it felt so long, I feel like Lockhart does a great job when it comes to condensing both character building and plot building within this book; I haven’t read any of her other material yet but I’m willing to after reading this book.
Okay, let’s talk about the Sinclair family as a whole. I feel like that family is a very self destructive family, they do things without thinking or caring for one another. This trait doesn’t seem to reflect on the Liars, they all very much just want to be happy together forever and don’t want to risk their relationship when it comes to their mother’s arguments over inheritance. However saying that, I could also say that it’s what lead the Liars to become so destructive. When it comes to Cadence you can say it’s self destructiveness because in the end she’s the one who comes up with the plan, leads the entire operation and ends up getting too ahead of herself too fast. She also tortures herself to remember things too fast by writing down memories and piecing them together as well as begging her family to tell her what happened. I feel like we could’ve had a bit more Tipper in the book, she died quite early in without much of an input anyway; I felt that maybe she was a strong independent woman unlike her daughters who rely on their fathers money, maybe Lockhart didn’t want Tipper to be an overpowering character as Harris is meant to be the one in the higher position and he is definitely portrayed like that as soon as Tipper dies and he has rights over her belongings and has to distribute his own belongings out for after his death. Also I’d just like to finish this up by saying... WHY KILL THE DOGS!? Honestly as soon as that part came about in the book I was in tears!
Gat and Cadence’s relationship was beautifully written. There wasn’t too much and wasn’t too little. It wasn’t cringe, it was the perfect amount of romance.
Getting to my feeling on the plot twist... I was SHOOK, literally shook. I dropped my book. I thought that maybe they were just going to live with the lie (hint the title / the name of their group) but no, not only were the beautiful dogs killed off but so were the rest of the Liars and I for one was left in a sea of tears because I wasn’t ready for it. The fact that they came back as suspected ghosts to help support Cady made me cry, although the relationship between the 4 should become shattered like the rest of the Sinclair family it isn’t. The Liars didn’t hold a grudge and that’s what made them so honest. I don’t believe that the group name “The Liars” suited them because they were the most honest bunch out of the entire family, they were always honest in a family full of secrets, betrayal and lies and still ironically they were called “the Liars” it’s truly poetic if you think about it.
By far this is one of my favorite YA books so far. Everything that needed to be captured in this book was captured. The book had me thinking for the majority of it. It raised important questions to do with race, social class and even feminism. I enjoyed every moment of reading that book and I’ll probably read it again soon, it was that good in my opinion.
