female awesome meme ☉ non-warrior characters [3/5] ↳ Ruby Oliver Because on some level, even though it never turns out to be true, and even though I should know better, I still expect life to be like the movies.
Reblogging this lovely thing.
OMG I LOVE WE WERE LIARS SO MUCH. I cannot explain. I love it as much as I do my family. No joke. I just have one question--theres been lots of controversy over whether u copied/got inspiration for your ending from movies such as fight club or the uninvited. Is that true?
Still answering questions that were sent in during my long hiatus from Tumblr.
I haven't heard any of this controversy but I'm very up front about literary influences on all my books -- I'm constantly borrowing from other stories, movies, video games, comics. It's the nature of literature in the post-modern age, and the nature of my brain in particular. There's a cocktail in my brain of many many influences, and I put them together into something of my own making.
Influences on Liars that are overtly referred to in the novel include: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, various fairy tales, King Lear by William Shakespeare.
Not referenced overtly but definitely still there: The Tempest by Shakespeare, Fight Club by Chuck Pahlanuik, the film The Uninvited, the film The Magnificent Ambersons, Brideshead Revisted by Evelyn Waugh, the film The Sixth Sense... and more.

Hi! I read the last three books of "The Boyfriend Quartet" when I was in high school and I love it!!! (The school didn't have the first book for me to read, but I got the basic info about the first book from the other books). Is that bad of me to not read the very first book?
Note: Continuing to answer OLD OLD questions I never saw during my hiatus from Tumblr!
NEVER FEEL BAD ABOUT READING or NOT READING, unless you were assigned something for school. Life is too short and reading is too much fun.
I abandon books part-way through all the time.
But if you're curious, book 1 in the Ruby Oliver Quartet is THE BOYFRIEND LIST. The covers are like a million years old but I think they're still damn funny if I say so myself. A tiny sample:
1. Adam (but he doesn’t count.)
2. Finn (but people just thought so.)
3. Hutch (but I'd rather not think about it.)
4. Gideon (but it was just from afar.)
5. Ben (but he didn't know.)
6. Tommy (but it was impossible.)
7. Chase (but it was all in his mind.)
8. Sky (but he had someone else.)
9. Michael (but I so didn't want to.)
10. Angelo (but it was just one date.)
11. Shiv (but it was just one kiss.)
12. Billy (but he didn't call.)
13. Jackson (yes, okay, he was my boyfriend. Don't ask me any more about it.)
14. Noel (but it was all a mistake.)
15. Cabbie (but I'm undecided.)
Before anyone reading this thinks to call me a slut -- or even just imagines I'm incredibly popular --- let me point out that the above list includes absolutely every single boy I have ever had the slightest, little, any-kind-of-anything with.
Boys I never kissed are on this list.
Boys I never even talked to are on this list.
Doctor Z told me not to leave anyone off. Not even if I think he's unimportant.
In fact, especially if I think he's unimportant.
Doctor Z is my shrink, and she says that for purposes of the list, the boyfriends don't have to be official. Official, unofficial -- she says it doesn't matter, so long as I remember the boy and something about what happened.

Why did their family call them liars? And why did it happen only AFTER Gat started coming to the island?
I get this question a lot! (I am answering a lot of old backed-up questions, since I came back to Tumblr after a long absence).
There is a lovely version of the origin of the name "Liars" in the upcoming Prime Video TV show (airing spring 2025).
Basically, I wrote several scenes in which the four kids get up to mischief (more mischief with Gat, perhaps, inspiring the Sinclair kids to show off, but also more mischief because they're eight, and then nine, and so on...up to more stuff). None of the scenes was that good, and the flashback slowed the action of the main story, so I cut the explanation every time. But basically, in every version, they do something naughty and lie about it!
Here's a behind-the scenes pic of the Liars' scrabble board.

Just finished 'We were liars' by E. Lockhart.
Omg.
oh my god.
Oh My God.
Wow.
I don't have a lot of words, but imagine a marauders au.
Remus is Cadence.
Sirius is Gat
James is Mirren
Peter is Johnny.
The story unfolds in Harry's third year, when Remus is back in Hogwarts. James, Peter and Sirius are all there.
It ends in a prank gone wrong.
Imagine.
Love this description so much.
So there is a really important Liars question I can't get out of my mind- especially since I'm writing my dissertation on it. Did Cadence ever win the gold in handball or did she have to rearrange the part for silver?
Aw, thanks for this question, and for writing about my work. Cadence doesn't even play handball :). But I like to think that as her health returns, she plays tennis again.
Third book in the WWL universe comes out November 2025. Keep your eyes open.
hi! i recently reread we were liars again as a sophomore in college, after reading it for the first time as a high schooler. i had a small question- I go to Pomona College, and there seems to be subtle and small references to Pomona! From Mirren saying it and Clairmont, which is similar to Claremont, where Pomona is located. Is there a reason to this? Thank you!
Thanks for reading so closely -- but no. Mirren does claim she's going to Pomona, but Clairmont is just a name I chose for the house because it sounds fancy. Any other connection is coincidental!
Is there going to be a movie adaptation?
Yes, a TV adaptation of We Were Liars, 8 episodes. On Prime Video in Spring 2025 and starring the actors above! Esther MacGregor (Mirren) , Joseph Zada (Johnny), Shubham Maheshwari (Gat) and Emily Alyn Lind (Cadence). Also starring Candice King, Mamie Gummer, Rahul Kohli, David Morse and Caitlyn Fitzgerald. Showrunners: Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie.
I just found my own Tumblr again after years of neglect. There are lots of unanswered questions, and the above is one of them! I'm going to try to answer them in the coming month. xo E. Lockhart
books read/re-read in 2017: genuine fraud - e . lockhart
her life was cinematic. she looked superb in the light from the streetlamps. after the fight, her cheeks were flushed. bruises were forming underneath her clothes, but her hair looked excellent. and oh, her clothes were so very flattering. yes, it was true that she was criminally violent. brutal, even. but that was her job and she was uniquely qualified for it, so it was sexy.
Love it. Thanks, @admlynch.
The universe is seeming really huge right now. I need something to hold on to.
:) Nice one, @odairannies.
