caliburn was just talking about him so now i want to as well. king charming is a man who does not care about the genuine wellbeing of his children. he had kids to produce enough capable heirs to pass the kingdom onto when they’re of age. this man actively encourages the {sexualization} of his teenage daughter for the sake of what he thinks shes supposed to represent for her gender and as a child of royalty.

darling’s supposed to be around 10-12 years old here since this takes place a few years before she starts high school. even as young as she was here, she can still recognize how weird this behavior is, even if she can’t fully understand it.

her parents are fine with her being harassed because it means shes growing into exactly what they need her to be (a beautiful woman who can represent the kingdom who will be married off once she’s old enough)

once this [insistent marriage proposals from young boys] becomes an inconvenience for him, not the child being subjected to it, he decides to lock her in a tower for years under the guise of wanting to “protect her”

and i wouldn’t even go as far to say that king charming does this to protect her. literally no indication is made that king charming wants to protect her from suitors or that her safety is at stake. more that her growing up has become an inconvenience that he has to deal with. he’s acting like he don’t actively encourage this behavior and he’s the main part of the reason they ended up in this predicament in the first place. [note: the king didn’t make this happen but him and his wife sat up there and enabled that shit. im also wondering what made all those boys start fawning over darling in the first place. its not the first time we’ve seen this happen, like with apple and some of the other princesses. it seems like a mix of multiple things; royalty equals celebrity, the charmings and their inherent magical ability to make people love them, how young boys are raised in ever after, the general culture of the charming kingdom, other eahisms, whatever whatever]

not once do the king (or queen) ask if darling’s okay or how this makes her feel or if it has affected her at all. because her feelings don’t matter here. they never really have. as long as she serves her “purpose” to the kingdom, the king could really care less. see how darling says ‘i thought you were proud of me because i’m so charming’ he [king charming] only cares that she’s knows she’s beautiful. he acknowledges this but goes right back to complaining of how this affects him.

darling being locked in a tower isn’t for the sake of her safety or wellbeing, but another way for her parents to control her.

I think overthinking the Beauty family lineage might help understand how the destiny system is supposed to proceed if someone dies childless. Hear me out.

Briar and Rosabella are cousins. Their moms were twins. This begs the question: how did 2 destinies wind up in the same family with 1 main character destiny and a prince charming? Was their mom a sleeping beauty, or a beast's beauty? If they were just siblings but not twins, I would suggest half siblings as a solution to this problem, but they are twins so both sets of parents are the same.

Well, they do have 2 parents. 2 parents and 2 destinies, maybe each destiny came from a different parent.

"But their dad is a charming, not a main character destiny!" I hear you protest. Yes, he was. But what if one of his siblings wasn't?

If we're willing to accept the idea that younger siblings of main character destiny people could start new Charming lines, then maybe their dad had an older sister who was either a sleeping beauty or a beast's beauty. What if she was infertile, or for some other reason died without kids? What if the destiny then passed to his children as next in line (skipping him because he had already fulfilled a prince charming destiny)

Thus, the two Beauty lines merge into one line, with two sisters each taking a destiny. Then the cousins from there, and so on as the lines diverge again.

I think this theory has some merit, but it would need a little more work shopping to figure out how it works with Poppy not becoming a charming and with the charming trio's situation. But to be fair, I think that situation needs a theory to explain it as well. What fairy tale was Queen Charming a part of that she married a Prince Charming? Why are they not known by that fairy tale like all the other characters are (think of Apple as an example, her dad was a charming too)? Why did none of the kids get queen charming's destiny? All of this kind of needs an explanation. For how it works with the theory, this would mean that king charming has an older sibling with a main character destiny, and one of the kids, probably Daring as the oldest, should get Queen Charming's destiny, leaving the other two to be charmings.

I wish we would have gotten a websisode called "Catching up with the Charmings“ and it is exactly what the title implies but it also serves as a recap for everything that has happened so far. This serves as a special/first episode for a continuation. It starts with the news anchor from the eah universe explaining that the show has officially been cancelled and we are shown how that came to be.

It started right after Epic Winter as a form of publicity by King Charming because of the recent fiasco with Daring actually not being Apple’s destined prince. The more time we spend with the family the more dysfunctional it becomes. Things go even way more downhill once Darling opens up about her being Apple’s destined prince

At first the family/corporation avoids the Apple true loves kiss topic as much as possible and they try to shift it into Daring just becoming the new beast (while sneaking some propaganda against raven’s rebellion and trying to blame this shift on it). This obviously hurts Darling deeply and it makes her isolate herself a bit. The sudden (further) rise to fame leads Daring to become over-the-top self absorbed as a means of coping with (avoiding) a possible life crisis. The further we get into this the more chaotic and obviously unhappy the family gets. Darling is barely talking to anyone, Daring is having tremendous mood-swings, Queen Charming becomes strangely wistful about her life as a teenager back when she was friends with Marian and Snow, King Charming is becoming a megalomaniac and being emotionally abusive to his children and it all finally collapses when Dexter becomes official with Raven. A major fight breaks out. Darling comes out as a lesbian. The moment is weirdly wholesome and everyone involved is supportive and loving, but King Charming is grinding his teeth together.

This is the last scene of the show. We go Mack to the news anchor who announces the show to be cancelled. Breaking News: Queen Charming has come out as a lesbian, moved by her daughter, and divorces King Carming. He goes on to become that universes equivalent of Kanye.

oh ABSOLUTELY.

King Charming would totally have a handful of mistresses. and i have a feeling Queen Charming (Daring, Dexter, and Darling’s mom) would know, and not particularly care. it could be a plot point that she doesn’t know and when she finds out she’s devastated and he completely tarnishes the family name, but i think it would be more interesting if she did know.

maybe, it’s that the children don’t know, and when they find out, they tell their mother, who ends up telling them that she knows and is completely fine with it. when they all look at her confused, she goes on to tell them that the two of them have never really been in love, so they conceived the amount of children they needed to continue the stories, and became co-parents rather than partners. they still respect each other and present themselves as a happily married couple to the public, but they’re really more like roommates. and i mean they live in a castle, there’s probably plenty of room for them to live separately and not see each other unless absolutely necessary.

(also, them not being in love and King Charming having mistresses would be pretty rebellious and i think that would seriously add to the Charming kids’ character development!!)

i also love the concept of an EAH live action being a bit more mature, since most of the people that grew up with the fandom would be a lot older than they were when the show first came out

I've been trying to develop a sort of long headcanon of Ever After High and every time King Charming shows up he's either cockblocking his son or the Good King (they were best friends when attending eah, almost like brothers, James-Potter-and-Sirius-Black style)(the Good King was already in love with the Evil Queen back then and they were secretly dating and Charming OF COURSE didn't know about it)(he incredibly always ended up looking and calling out for the GK while he was smooching with the EQ)

Comparing toxic masculinity in King Charming vs. The Huntsman.

King Charming started out as a polite kid, who treated everyone somewhat the same, mostly because he was shy and wasn't all that misogynistic, but then as he got older he became more and more conservative and misogynistic due to Charming's influence on him and he believed that this is the way things are supposed to be.

Meanwhile, Huntsman was a very misogynistic little shit as a teen due to his parents' beliefs, especially his father's influence, and he held himself to those standards through high school ( which is why he wasn't very well liked, and he and Red didn't have a very good relationship despite their fairytale roles). But after he finished high school, he fell in love so hard with his future wife (who was, by the way, the only girl in a family, and was having non of that bullshit) and started thinking, "Why would I uphold this way of thinking if it clearly hurts her"? So he started slowly changing himself for her. He has not change everything he belives in and sometimes struggle with what are good traditions and what are not. Becoming a parent just made him question the morals he was rasied with even more. A lot of time he is questioning himself if he's doing a good job as a father but he's stubborn and he doesn't want to look like he's insecure (some old belifes die hard).
