Creative Connections: Instagram Challenge #8

WEEK 8

THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE: Capture a building that stands out to you. Sir John Soane is one of Britain’s most celebrated architects. He once lived in Ealing with his family. 

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE: Hashtag your Instagram photos with #EalingConnections to submit them to the project. We welcome entries from all ages and locations, and photos do not need to be taken in the borough of Ealing.

PRIZES: Selected entries will be displayed at the National Portrait Gallery, London, on 11 September 2014 and on the Gallery's website.

THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE: Capture yourself or somebody else posing like an athlete. Olympic-winning runner Lillian Board grew up in Ealing. Her talent was first noticed by a PE teacher at Grange Secondary Modern Girls’ School.

WEEK 6

THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE: The World Cup is here! Capture yourself or somebody else supporting their favourite team while standing as tall as they can. At 6 foot 7 inches (2.01m), Peter Crouch is one of the tallest football players in England. He moved to Ealing as a child and attended school locally at North Ealing Primary, and later Drayton Manor High.

Art students from Brentside High School in the London Borough of Ealing have been exploring eighteen inspirational people in the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection connected to their neighbourhood. Each Friday over the summer we’ll post a new challenge linked to one of our inspiring Ealing figures. You have until the following Wednesday to respond.

Thank you to everyone who entered last Friday’s Creative Connections Instagram challenge – you contributed some amazing photographs (and videos!) of people dancing to celebrate Margot Fonteyn! Here is a submission from sarascobie.

Margot Fonteyn grew up in Ealing, and took her first dance lessons in the borough. By the time she was twenty, she had danced the leads in Giselle, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. Many consider her to be one of the greatest dancers of all time.

AN EALING TRILOGY, 2014

Showing as a projected video installation at the National Portrait Gallery from 20th June - 14th Sept 2014 as part of this year's Creative Connections display

Responding to the gallery’s collection of sitters who have connections to Ealing, West London, I collaborated with a group of young people from the borough to devise content for this slow-moving narrative portrait.
