Shravana and Dhanishta, the ear and drum
(The ear..drum..get it? Ear drum…okay..I’ll stop now)
I had a realization while doing some research for something entirely else and wanted to share it. Think about the symbols of Shravana and Dhanishta nakshatras, the ear and the drum. Shravana represents the ear, the faculty through which sound is first perceived, experienced inwardly, and absorbed by the listener. Interestingly, the eardrum itself resides within the ear, acting as a tiny internal drum that transforms sound waves into something the body can process. In this way, even within Shravana, sound is already being converted into internal experience. Sound by itself is just vibrations that we hear, like pitches, tones or noises. Rhythm emerges when these sounds are organized in time, so in other words, when a pattern is formed over time. Dhanishta channels what was heard into rhythm, using the eardrum itself as a literal instrument (drum). What began as inner vibrations (Shravana, the drum in the ear) is expressed as action, combining everything absorbed into tangible results, such as creating rhythmic beat that others can follow.
In doing this Dhanistha sets the tone. Just like a drum keeping a steady beat, it organizes timing and guides action, influencing the environment in a way that others can naturally follow. By turning absorbed knowledge into well timed action that others can follow, Dhanistha gains viability and influence, which can lead to fame and practical results of their skill can also bring wealth. This dynamic becomes even more revealing when we examine the inherent desires of these nakshatras. Shravana seeks to hear praise and to protect its reputation, reflecting its inward focus on perception and validation. Dhanishta, by contrast, aspires toward the summit of the Gods. A metaphorical peak, the highest point from which the drum’s sound can regenerate across the landscape (amplifying their influence). Here, perception is transformed into expression. What is first heard by the ear of Shravana is amplified and echoed by Dhanishta. According to Prash Trivedi, Shravana and Dhanistha form a pair. Which can be seen in Dhanishta’s alternative name “Shravishta”, meaning “most heard of” or “most famous”.
“Music must never offend the ear, but must please the listener, or, in other words, must never cease to be music.” - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Sun, Mercury and Saturn in Shravana nakshatra
This emphasis on the listener’s experience, rather than on the music alone, aligns well with the symbolism of Shravana. As I mentioned eariler, Shravana represents the ear, the faculty through which sound is first received and internalized. With multiple planets in Shravana, Mozart would have been particularly attuned to sound as an internal experience, perceiving rhythm and melody not just as abstract structures but as sensations to be absorbed and felt deeply. It makes sense, then, that he would focus on ensuring that his music provided a pleasant and harmonious experience for listeners. This, of course, solidified and boosted Mozart’s reputation to heights that has never been seen in the world of music. Which show how Shravana can also still be just as influential in it’s own way.
“Everything in my life has been about sound and making music, so Beats represents just that. The improvement of sound and the dedication to everything I’ve been doing from the day I started” - Dr.Dre: Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Dhanishta ( ascendant lord )
There is much more focus on making music than the experience of the sounds themselves. The act of creating beats and music is an intentional application of sound (especially in his beats, though he had produced full music tracks as well). This is something Dre has seemingly mastered, allowing him not only to excel in his craft as a (highly known and sought after) music producer but also to become a household name in the music industry. His influence extends through his record labels, Death Row Records and Aftermath Entertainment, where he shaped the careers of numerous artists, and through his Beats by Dre brand of headphones and speakers, which remain highly regarded for their quality and whose logo has become a recognizable symbol of his achievements.
P.S. I’m not a professional or doctor so please do not see me as one. There’s also so much that happened while I was writing this. I had to stop midway cause I seen a bee and proceeded to fight for my life.
