Day 7 (#latergram edition) . . . . Got up early and got on the road to Richmond. Visiting my old Indiana home. Misty mornings through the hills, opening to flat soybeans and corn on either side of me. Breakfast at the usual haunt (although renamed). Hair game on point. First time on campus in three plus years. Last day I was faculty at EC was my last stroll across campus. Surprised more people on campus than I could count. Got a good dose of amazing hugs. Knew the scoop within 5mins of being on campus. (As always) Avoided my former department like a champ. Went yarn shopping and got to relax and see more people I love. Got more hugs and cuddles with fur babies. Dinner with two amazing men, taking and catching up, shutting the restaurant down. Late, dark, drive back to the Homestead. . . . . #earlhamcollege #plyfiberarts #richmondindiana #smalltown (at Richmond, Indiana)
https://youtu.be/5FLsVngJkwY Often in life people are not only worried by unpredictability and instability (despite failing to truly recognize the fragility and illusory nature of their own) but by strong personalities. Some may think such persons do not listen, consider alternatives, etc. This can be more blindness on their part than accurate observation or careful parsing of motive and intent. Now, there are moments when others will seek to control us (and they may even have kind, loving motives!). Jesus himself knew this. He had to lie, yes, LIE, to his disciples, knowing they would not encourage him in his calling. Peter after all received the following rebuke: "Get behind me, Satan!" Ha. I mean, look, we can either fit the mold others fashion, get and stay in their boxes, or keep growing. We can stunt our growth or instead choose to become even stronger. Yes, the ego actually needs to become STRONGER, not weaker or more conformist. Let's increase our capacity for awareness even when it runs up against the walls, confines, and blinders of others (again, however well meaning)! #kenwilber #ego #psychology #spirituality #growth #carljung #individuation #theSelf #consciousness #enlightenment #God #infinity #mind Appreciate my time at #earlhamcollege for exposing me to Ken's work :-)
"Individualism has been a defining feature of modern thought" (https://youtu.be/gaTSuMJij2g). I was introduced to Nancy's work during my time as an undergrad at Earlham. Some good insights here #anabaptist #christian #postmodern #mennonite #evangelical #nancymurphy #fullerseminary #earlhamcollege #isolation #communities #personhood One of her books: Bodies and Souls, Or Spirited Bodies? Also, we need more women in leadership (something many anabaptists unfortunately do not believe given their slavish devotion to 1 Timothy)! Because I grew up in a not so well-off family, I want to help other people live a better life - things like fighting poverty and giving people equal opportunity, especially the girls. My mom was the first one to get education in a family of ten, and she had to come through difficult situations. Everyone should have a chance at success and equal opportunity.
My sister is ten and I watch her overcome challenges. If my sister goes through these situations, what about other people? I was a beneficiary of government funding to get an education. I was the lucky one, so I ask myself what can I do now so that others can benefit from my opportunity.
-What do you want people to say about you when you're no longer on this earth?
I want them to say that it was good having me. I want to have an impact in their life and I want to make sure that they feel I cared for them, and that I contributed to their success and that they had someone to talk to when they faced difficulties, and I want them to realize circumstances don't necessarily lead to success. That you can make it despite your circumstances. It's not all about getting what you want but doing the best with what you have.

We feel anxiety and vulnerability when we show ourselves initially. I have found that the key to building a conversation that is more than superficial is if you are open and share yourself. If you make yourself vulnerable and open, then the person you are talking to is more likely to do so.
Conversations often have this weird push and pull going on. If you are passing someone on The Heart for five seconds, it seems rude if you don’t ask the superficial questions like ‘How are you’ or ‘How are classes,’ but nobody has the time in passing to answer with or listen to the real answers.”
