Hey everyone! Have a little ficlet from Mod Ten!

I have to control my energy.

Haeun stood in front of the dummy, took a few deep breaths. Control. Control. She could do this. Breathe in. Breathe out. The cheap plastic ball in her hand collapsed in on itself, creating an object not unlike a small star. It burned brightly, and as Haeun touched it, its warmth was pleasant, not painful. So far so good. In, out. She threw the star at the dummy, it made contact. It went right through. Now to stop it gently, mitigate the explosion. It was getting smaller, smaller…

“Finally learning to control your powers?”

The star exploded, sending what remained of the dummy barrelling into Haeun. She gasped and fell to the ground, a hand on her side. It had cut through her shirt, and it would be bruised, but it didn’t seem like anything was broken. She’d been so startled and so angry and upset at the words that she didn’t bother to protect herself.

“Looks like not. Greeeat.” Kai went back to his phone and rolled his eyes, walking away.

Those words hurt more than the dummy did.

Haeun gritted her teeth and let her shoulders shake. It was best to let the emotions out. They made her powers more powerful, yes, but they also made them much less controllable. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she balled her hands up into fists. Everything hurt. Everything sucked. She didn’t deserve this. She didn’t deserve to be here.

She’d destroy the world before she saved it.

As the dark thoughts threatened to overcome her, Haeun took her phone out of her pocket, stepped out of the training area. Surreptitiously, she wiped her tears away and looked around. She hit her only starred contact, put the phone to her ear.

“Hey sis. I kinda need a pick-me-up.”
