Possibly based upon the journal of his uncle, Henry Foe, Daniel Defoe's (~1660 - ~1731) 'A Journal of the Plague Year' (1722) is considered one of the earliest examples of the modern English novel. Written 57 years after the Great Plague (1665-1666) the first person narrative is most commonly categorised as historical fiction... though critics continue to argue whether it is historical fact or literary fiction.
