Crafting Words of Earth and Water
Crafting Words of Earth and Water
By a river’s boulder-strewn gravelly bed, haiku unfurl in a meadow flecked with dandelions and cowslips. A sonnetfinds a foothold on a face of rock and in fine fissures ballads grow.We smell them in clods of earththat tumble crumbly from the plough;hear them in the songs of birds, trickle of streams and ocean’s roar;taste them in a blackberry’s words. On the beach, we trace them in sand, among…

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to do a pre-drywall walk through of a house being built in Athens with EarthCraft certification. Similar to LEED but less expensive and paperwork-heavy, EarthCraft is a program developed by Southface for energy efficiency and material reuse. Some of the features this house will include are a grey water system with two 1,000 gallon cisterns, PV cells on the roof, and passive lighting design.
Though I have some qualms about new construction on the Oconee River, it was pointed out that the certification does put priority for development on infill lots (this one is the last in a big neighborhood) over lots on the periphery of town. The view and the sound of the River going by are undeniably beautiful.
Southface and The Georgia Trust have partnered to create the EarthCraft Sustainable Preservation program, for which Rhodes Hall is a model example. Simple fixes like storm windows and extra insulation can go a long way for energy savings. As the saying goes, the greenest house is the one already built!
See you at Greenprints!
I’ve registered and am excited for my first Greenprints conference, which happens to be its 20th anniversary! Taking place March 12-14, Greenprints is produced by Southface, a leader in energy efficient infrastructure based out of Atlanta. What I’m especially jazzed about is the new EarthCraft Sustainable Preservation partnership between Southface and the Georgia Trust, the first sustainability certification for historic structures. More info about the conference here.
