and i think that's the thing about everyone's a star. it's a study album, a disguised protest album, it's a take-the-angst-and-turn-it-into-something-productive album. It's 'i suck and i'm sorry and i need to shake this feeling out of my bones jumping around at the club instead of wallowing in it because these are the only two options i have' 'and i'm sorry again, i will do it again, let me have my harm minimisation and still believe i can do better'. It's 'this chain of hurt is bigger than me but i'm in it and i need to tell my story in order to have any semblance of healing'. It's morally grey and it's bop after bop and it brings to light the fact that all of us have felt this way at some point, and nothing productive comes out of the way that we, for so long, tend to instinctively hide it
theyre so fucking cool wow
My edit of Spotify Wrapped card, but Everyone's a Star! version!!
cake really is the secret 5sos ingredient to a perfect song bc why did two of the three songs they cowrote together gain the most popularity of the non-single tracks... something about their pens (and voices) together is just magic idk. hopefully this means we get more cake songs in the future
isn't it wild how rarely we got cake songs with the past few albums, and now they're responsible for some of the most popular songs on eas? i'm obviously a bit biased because cake's solo music is the most aligned with my preferences, but i do have a theory for why the cake songs on eas! are so popular and it's really simple: they're the songs the most people connect to the most easily.
part of that is probably related to the subject matter being a little more relatable to your average listener than reflections on fame, but i think the bigger reason has to do with what happens when you put luke and calum together as a songwriting duo essentially left to their own devices.
they both excel at introspective and emotionally evocative songwriting, but do it in slightly different ways. with just the two of them writing together, you get such undiluted FEELINGS in the songs. the combo of calum's storytelling skills with luke's ability to express emotion in a really authentic way through his lyrics and their shared preference for songs where you can feel the emotion in the music and production leads to some really epic results.
it's also so interesting to look back at cake songs of the past and see how they've progressed and changed as songwriters both individually and together. i won't get into it too much bc we'd be here all day, but i think their solo projects have really boosted their confidence as songwriters and helped them understand their strengths in a way that really allowed cake to thrive together on this album.
i'm hoping maybe that increased confidence, along with such positive results with the huge and maybe unexpected popularity of isinsa and start over (i'm thinking of ashton's post where he talked about this a bit) means we'll keep getting served delicious cake songs in the future now that they know how powerful it is!
(and you're right about their voices together being magical too! their tones complement each other so well and the blend of their voices is so seamless and heavenly but also somehow textured in a way you can feel resonating in your chest. i'm not sure it's possible for a person to listen to the second chorus of lover of mine and not fully ascend.)
✨💞yay
