A Stone Giant at Rano Raraku, Easter Islands

my favourite thing about the Easter Islands is that Thor Heyerdahl (Norwegian adventurer who fancied himself a scientist but wasn’t really) saw some similarities in Easter Island statues and indigenous sculpting in South America and decided that the Easter Island population must have sailed from South America on rafts

“That’s silly,” said archaeologists

“I’m gonna prove it! I’m gonna sail a raft from South America to the Easter Islands!” said Thor Heyerdahl

and then he did, and almost got tipped over by a whale, and he was thrilled about proving his theory

“But dude, genetic analysis has shown that Easter Island populations didn’t come from South America at all. Furthermore, a rafting adventure is no way to prove a scientific theory,” said archaeologists
