If you’ve seen ‘The Help’, you’d know that dishes of food are some of the most important props in the film. Similarly, in the novel,’The Help’ by Kathryn Stockett – which the film as based on – several plot points and scenes happen at a tea party or dinner which involves lots of food – Southerners, after all, love to eat. Perhaps the most memorable food scene is the one where Minnie serves her infamous chocolate pie – a delicious treat that is sought after by most of Jackson – to Miss Hilly. As revenge for Hilly’s treatment of her, Minnie bakes a ‘secret’ ingredient into the pie – check out the video below.
Are you feeling a little squeamish? Don’t worry, we’re not sharing a recipe for chocolate pie today. Instead, we’re showing you how to make another of Hilly’s favourite dishes – deviled eggs.
Deviled Eggs
Deviled eggs are an Italian dish that are especially popular in Midwestern and Southern USA. They are made by hard boiling eggs, peeling them, cutting them in half and mixing the yolk with a variety of other ingredients like mayonnaise or peppers.
In America, they are typically served cold as hors d’oeuvres. In ‘The Help’ , Aibeleen serves Elizabeth’s friends deviled eggs at a bridge party hosted by Elizabeth:
“Finally I do Miss Leefolt. She the hostess so she got to pick up her eggs last. And soon as I’m done, Miss Hilly say, “Don’t mind if I do, and snatch herself two more eggs, which don’t surprise me.”
Want to try your hand at making deviled eggs yourself? Here’s a recipe. Serve them as starters or as an afternoon snack.
