12th Dec - Tasteful or not tasteful? That is the seasonal question. Normally, after spending a huge chunk of the year doing beautiful Christmas looks, in one form of another, I like to kick back a little with some kitsch and fun styles. One season, I decided to wrap all my gifts to look like the person I was giving it to (making a wrapped, garden spade look like my dad was a fave) One year my sister arrived at mine to wrap our prezzies with the most disgusting, multicoloured wrap with a photographic print of lairy, vintage baubles and immediately said ‘don’t judge the wrap I went Christmas shopping with PMT’ this became one of our private sayings whenever we saw anything tacky, as in ‘must have gone Christmas shopping with PMT’ I’m committed to using as little waste as possible in future and creating as little as poss in terms of items that can’t be reused or recycled (the above mentioned lairy bauble paper is probably still intact in some landfill) with the hundreds of press shows and exhibitions I have styled and designed, I get the chills at the volume of stuff I have used for a few days (sometimes hours) that has headed to the dump. So here’s the deal: I’ve recently been sad to learn that most Christmas wrapping paper isn’t recyclable and tonnes of the stuff ends up in (presumably, ridiculously colourful) landfills. Anything with a plastic coating or glitter is a recycling no no, who knew? My humble suggestions are (as seen here): sturdy card boxes that can be used multiple times, plain, non-coated paper stamped/decorated or manilla brown paper (a personal fave) with jaunty ribbons and the like. I favour screwing up brown paper and ironing it flat for a bit of texture. If you want to be really cheeky you can ‘over wrap’ a breakable in IKEA with their handy roll of brown paper near the tills and reuse (I mean, don’t take the p!ss and wrap a single 50p ‘VILJESTARK’ vase to looked like a lagged boiler!) To be a further eco bore, remove any ribbons or sellotape before sticking in the recycling.
