Atlantis - A Lost Sonnet by Eavan Boland

A collection of poetry my sister once lent to me before moving across the ocean. I attempted but failed to return it to her a few times. I guess it is mine now? . . #eavanboland #poetry #apoemaday #nationalpoetrymonth #carcanetpress https://www.instagram.com/p/B_LfjpsAZmU/?igshid=zn7karmxbk8o
In this poem by Eavan Boland the author talks about the lost mythical city of Atlantis. In the author’s poem he begins with a sense of wonder on as to how a city could have suddenly disappeared underwater. Then the author relates it to the context of his city and describes features he remembers most. After all of these, the author then arrived to a conclusion on as to how the city of “Atlantis” disappeared. The author described that the so called city of Atlantis was just invented to help people empathise the sorrows of losing something forever and that there was no such thing as a city that disappeared underwater.

Just finished my essay on public and personal issues in Eavan Boland's poetry. I'm not a huge fan of 'The Black Lace Fan My Mother Gave Me' or 'The War Horse', but This Moment' is one of the happiest things I've ever read. 'Love' makes me sad if I'm honest, I never want that to happen to anyone and yet it seems to happen to lots of couples. I love it as a poem, though, because she really paints pictures of what their love was and what it is now. 'Child Of Our Time' is honestly one of the most harrowing things I've ever read. I can't read it too often because I have a habit of crying at it! However, she succeeded in getting her message across - most of my class were upset after reading it. All-in-all I think 'This Moment' is my favourite. It's so simple and yet it manages to make us think about the really simple, everyday things that you don't even look at most of the time. 3/4 mid-term essays done now thank God! If anyone has any thoughts on Boland's poetry or is doing the LC poetry course at the moment give me a shout, I'd love to talk about them!
