Alan Kenji Balance
Alan was a good kid. A freshman student of mine when I was teaching on Ebeye. He was quiet, his English wasn't so great, but he always made an effort, with school work and to befriend me outside of class. Effort was something rare on Ebeye, especially with his class, so him trying to do well and trying to learn and fighting through the language barrier made Alan stand out. He was a kind hearted, good natured kid. Joking around with him on the balcony of the school had been one of my favorite memories of my time on the island. This past Friday I learned through Facebook that Alan was in the hospital. I don't know why he was there, but it was serious. This morning I got the news that he had passed. I know none of you reading this will knew Alan. I just ask that you please keep his family, girlfriend, and friends in prayer as they mourn their loss.
Back at school now. A little worried about my future coming into this last year of school. But I read a blog post and was texted one of the biggest compliments from Robell today about the impact I left on Ebeye when I was there. He told me the people still talk about Lonnie and I, as if we just left, and that the work we did actually touched people. Like, today, almost one and a half to two years since we've been there, they're still appreciative of our hard work. I'm so happy about that because we really exhausted ourselves and gave our all to those people during our short time there. We left feeling like nothing we did made a difference. But I guess this is another lesson in planting seeds and not always being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor. That was so reassuring and made me feel so good tonight. I’m so happy God was able to use me that year. Best year of my life so far.
If you want to know what Robell is up to, follow him and his awful stream of conscious, misspelled, grammar error filled (hahaha) blog posts at dogyearsebeye.tumblr.com
Flower Power: We rarely see flowers here in the island because not much vegetation can survive the saline elements in the wind, aside from the island plants, but I was grateful to see this blossom in our apartment sideway this morning.
G'morning, from my island. 🌅 #ebeye #marshallislands #sunrise
