Echo?

Disclaimer: My opinions on Echo do NOT reflect my opinion on Tasya, I think she’s an amazing actress and person and doesn’t deserve the hate people give her just for the character she plays.

So onto Echo…

Character

I think that Echo could have been a great character. She has a cool premise and she’s loyal to the point where she’s committed treacherous acts for her people (sounds like some characters we know…). And she was always portrayed as an antagonist, so imagine if we saw her side of the story that while the others were doing what they had to for their people, so was she. But instead of exploring who Echo was, the cause of her loyalty to Azgeda, her relationship with Roan, even a little bit about her integration into Spacekru and how she redeemed herself, Echo returns to exactly who she was in previous seasons in season 5. Instead of us seeing someone that had changed in the past 6 years for better or worse, like Clarke, Bellamy, Octavia and most of the other characters, we see her immediately revert to a ruthless spy, willing to do anything for her people which are now Spacekru. She returns to an almost antagonist role in the show and everything we’ve been told by the other members of Spacekru turn out to not be true, and she takes needlessly cruel actions. Which is why I don’t like Echo as a character, because I could have loved her but season 5 only hurt my view on her, instead of helping it which is what we’ve been told it was meant to do.

Becho

As someone who’ll ship Bellarke til my deathbed, I was never going to be a giant fan of Becho but it’s just a ship I really dislike, Bellarke aside. Let me compare it to Clexa for a second. Clarke and Lexa were a well-developed couple, sure my OTP was Bellarke but I actually liked Clexa and shipped while Lexa was alive. We saw Clarke go from being intimidated by Lexa, to partners, to someone she despised, back to partners and then lovers. It was a journey and audiences had an investment in it. Becho, they don’t, because we never got to see it develop. We never saw Echo redeem herself, we never saw Bellamy forgive her which knowing Bellamy would have taken a while. And then as I said before, Echo’s behaviour in season 5 isn’t making me like her anymore.

Basically, my thoughts on Echo is that she was a missed opportunity and if the show had taken the right steps I genuinely believe she could have turned into a fan-favourite but from what we saw of her in season 5 and the rushed feeling of Becho, I just don’t like her.
