What i found most interesting about the search of #picturebooks search was the amount of creative and interesting new idea that are coming out soon. i had always assumed that the picture book was a dying art form. It is great to see such a great wide range of diverse picture books. They stretch across a wide range of different topics and are a great resource for teachers to use.

I hope that you have enjoyed placement and are back on board ready to work through until the end of the trimester.

In seminars this week we have looked at Before Reading, Frontloading, and Predicting. In the week 6 seminar Powerpoint, there are excellent activities based around Way Home by Libby Hathorn. I would encourage you to read the prediction and questioning strategies demonstrated in those slides, to help you to come up with 5 questions that you would ask grade 6 children, directly addressing the front cover of DUST. You can use ideas that were explored in the week 6 seminar.

Your challenge is to present these five questions in a multi-modal format, we encourage you to be creative here, how can you ask these questions in an engaging manner?

Prompt 4 - Placement Reflection

During my placement, i really enjoyed the reading and writing programs that were in place. My class a weekly story book and a them that they would chose they would then rotate through groups that would include an IT activity, a punctuation activity, a response to the text and guided reading session with the teacher. While i was there i got to take these lesson with a focus on Dreamtime texts in the first week and inferencing in the second week. It gives the students routine while also giving then a change as the activities change from week to week. The children seemed to really enjoy this and got a lot out of it. 

Writing was mainly about structuring letters for the two weeks and practicing those skills which some kids struggled with more than others, But every Friday htey got a free write where they could write about whatever they wanted and the kids loved it. They always asked for a free write session when they saw writing on the timetable.

There was also a wide range of reading levels which is usually the case but had one child who had just finished the Harry Potter series and had started the first Lord of the Rings novel. Most children keen on simpler novels such as Paul Jennings which was an author focus from earlier in the year and the kids seemed to really enjoy with many having a copy of one of his books on their table.

Just in the small amount of time that I had on placement this year u have had a wide variety of importance put on handwriting by different teacher. My mentor was more relaxed about it ann cared more about the context of the writing than the writing itself. He did however have weekly handwriting session where the children were to complete a couple of pages in their handwriting books. ON one occasion he was away and i had a substitute with me. She was very old fashion i was running the classes for the day while she took a back step except for the handwriting as she felt there was not being enough importance place how how the children were writing, She made the students concentrate on their pencil grip, starting from the correct line and making sure it has a slant on the writing.

At primary school I had no real handwriting practice and no real importance was placed on it and maybe with some correlation i have terrible handwriting to this day. So much in fact that I cop a little bit of lip sometimes from the students about my writing on the whiteboard which is always good for a laugh.  But I found it strange how handwriting was nothing I ever gave much thought until this one teacher discussed it with me after the class. It can a skill that students these days lack because of digital technology but is something they must have. It changed my perceptive and if i was asked in a job interview what importance i place on handwriting i would say that it would be a focus of mine for my students to improve their handwriting fro the beginning of the year to the end.

This poster or posters was something that i saw in my second year placement that I really thought was helpful for the students. CAFE is not uncommon in many classroom and for good reason it focuses on key important points for literacy; Comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expanding vocabulary. Having this hanging in the classroom somewhere in one shape or form is a constant reminder for the children what is expected of them but also what they need to strive to improve.

ECL310 Prompt 1

When i was in primary school, not sure what grade it was but i had my Grandfather come in as a substitute teacher. During his time with us he read Andy Griffiths ‘The Day my Bum went Psycho’. Instantly all the kids were interested because of the title but we all as a class enjoyed it so much that we ended up getting how teacher when she cam back to finished the book with us. On placement I saw a similar thing with Paul Jennings and is something i would like to take into my own classroom
