Can you Replace these Popular Commercial Cleaning Supplies with Products from your Pantry
Vinegar
Whenever we talk about DIY commercial ingredients, vinegar is always brought up. As a handy acid and one with a smell that dissipates quickly, it can be great as a rinse-aid in the dishwasher as well as in cleaning glass, mirrors, and windows. The only guideline to keep in mind regarding vinegar is to never use it around marble surfaces. Marble is manufactured from carbonate materials, which reacts to the acid in the vinegar. Even if your marble has been sealed, you run the risk of running into complications when using vinegar against it.
Sodium bicarbonate
A very versatile cleaning alternative, sodium bicarbonate works because it’s abrasive and is alkaline which makes it great for general cleaning and neutralizing acids. Keep in mind sodium bicarbonate is not as effective as many commercial cleaning supplies however for less intense cleaning tasks, they may work. Consider sodium bicarbonate for minor cleans like wiping down benches and surfaces, deodorizing shoes, cleaning silver, and unclogging drains. Note that for each of these tasks, you will have to look up the exact recipe of what to mix with it.
Lemons
Lemons, like Coca-Cola, is a mild acid that is sometimes used in cleaning for its smell and performance. Lemons can be used to get rid of mineral deposits such as those that accumulate on kettle. They can also be used to remove soap scum and similar alkaline stains. Do keep in mind to never use lemon on copper or brass. If you try this, it initiates a reaction that will cause corrosion in the long run.
Olive oil
Believe it or not, olive oil can be used for several different commercial cleaning applications. If you need wooden surfaces to be more water repellant, rubbing some oil against it will help seal them. Oils like these are commonly used to seal wooden chopping boards and similar products. Olive oil can also be used to clean and seal cast iron, and to remove sticky materials like chewing gum. If you have some left over and want to apply them to squeaky door hinges, that’s another possible application.
Toothpaste
Like sodium bicarbonate, toothpaste is made from similar products and has other bicarbonate salts in it. As an abrasive cleaner, toothpaste can help remove wall marks when used on a damp cloth and will help clean off scuff marks.
