Yes, Needs Should Be Free

I find it funny how you folks assume socialism could not work when every time (at least that I know of in recent history) the very reason why socialist governments don't get to work is because ours has an active hand in destabilizing them, denying them access to world markets, and providing as many roadblocks to self-determination as possible.

Anything that can be used to deprive a person of the ability to care, feed, clothe, or house themselves, in others words, necessities, should be free at the ground level. It should not put them into cycles of debt. Needs should not be used as means to feed another's greed while depriving a person of their needs, or their ability to take care of their needs.

Every time a social experiment is tried where folks are given free money, resources, or aid, without means testing being an interfering factor, invariably it does those in the social experiment good. When we were getting those checks from the government it noticeably moved the needle on child poverty. Those families went right back to poverty when those checks stopped coming in.

Just because nothing is free in this world does not mean we should accept that greed and largesse as though they are natural, right, or good. Taxes are a way to solve this, indeed, most of these issues of economic inequality would be far better off if the rich were paying 1950s levels of taxation on their goods, luxuries, and estates.

JOIN US FOR ANOTHER WEEK OF ANTISPECIESIST ACTION, WORKSHOPS AND SKILLSHARING.

20th – 25th May, Hambacher Forst.

The third edition of Liberate or Die: From Cage to Freedom will aim to open a space in which we can come together, share skills, and attack speciesism. As before, the gathering will take place in the Hambacher Forst occupation, a focal point of anti-capitalist and climate justice resistance across Europe.

THIS EVENT IS ACTION-FOCUSED.

Aside from just sharing skills, every day of the gathering will be a day of action in which we can put new knowledge into practice. We want to motivate people to initiate actions autonomously, without seeking permission from mainstream/reformist organisations. There will be a range of possible actions depending on your particular interests and risk levels. Some actions may be suggested, but you are invited to come up with plans for yourselves and act spontaneously.

THIS EVENT IS INTERSECTIONAL.

We want to emphasise the interconnections between antispeciesism and all other struggles against oppression. That means bearing in mind different privileges that we hold and maintaining a space which aims to challenge all hierarchies and further total liberation – something that will also be reflected in the workshops offered. This is not a space for those with racist/sexist/homophobic/etc. views who have infiltrated some animal rights groups over recent years.

THIS EVENT IS FREE.

You don’t have to pay to attend! Even if donations are welcome, we believe people shouldn’t have to pay for anything. This event can be hosted for free because we self-organize – everyone attending is part of the crew, and is encouraged to take part in the maintenance of the gathering. If you see a job it’s yours!

THIS EVENT IS SQUATTED.

The gathering will take place in an autonomous land occupation. That means collectively taking care of the forest ecosystem – keep to the paths, pick up your trash, respect the wild. It also means keeping an eye out for intrusion from the state. Participants should be aware of the likelihood of intervention by cops, whether covertly or in uniform. Information will be shared on arrival on legal rights and how to deal with the filth.

so i’ve been doing a lot of thinking. I’ve always known conventional, get a desk job and pay off loans until you die, lifestyles weren’t for me.

for a while i debated living in a van. why? i don’t need a lot of space, i don’t need to pay rent, i don’t need to pay utilities, i get to travel. but then i realized that wasn’t gonna work for me. i suck at driving, getting car insurance at 18 would be a feat in itself. i’d never make any lasting connections or friends, and i wouldn’t be able to have pets.

then i realized i would be inheriting a small house up in Maine. it would’ve been perfect! i could rent out the actual house and live in the basement! i could raise a few chickens and sell eggs, i could grow and sell my own produce, maybe have a bee hive and sell honey, hell, even a goat and i could make goat milk soap or something! (it’s got a decent sized backyard) i could have everything i ever wanted.

but this too, is unattainable. it’s my favorite option, and a life i would kill to have. unfortunately in this late stage capitalist hell, selling good, organic, cruelty free and local stuff isn’t enough money to live on. i mean maybe it’s doable, but i doubt i’d be able to afford to take care of my animals, the house and myself. it’s the perfect scenario, but sadly unrealistic in this world.

lately i’ve been researching communes, thinking maybe i’ll be able to live that life after all. i mean, health insurance, a warm place to live, food and bills paid in exchange for some mild manual labor?! amazing!

but i’m scared of cults and authority, which is what communes often turn out as.

so, i’m just hoping one of you can help me figure out my shit.
