Where Are The Indigenous AFL Media Representatives On Channel Nine?
Aboriginal men have been playing AFL for a long time. Where are the Indigenous AFL coaches? Where are the Indigenous AFL media representatives on Channel Nine? Or on Seven? I always laugh when I hear Aussies say that we are not a racist nation. Their definition of what racism is, is so inadequate as to be pretty funny, unless you are Aboriginal. You get Eddie McGuire and the gang on Footy Confidential discussing the problems of Indigenous players like Ugle-Hagen and others from their very white perspective. How the f*** would they know what it is like to walk in his shoes?
The Omission Of Aboriginal Faces In The AFL Media On Nine
The media and the clubs are up there with the AFL executive as the high status stakeholders in the footy business. Apart from Eddie Betts on Fox Footy, who has been a ground breaker in this regard, Indigenous faces in the AFL media have been very thin on the ground. Fox Footy has led the way with the introduction of women and First Nation’s folk being represented on our screens in the AFL media. Free to air has been particularly shabby in comparison. Kerry Stokes, of course, has been the champion of Bruce Lehrmann and Ben Roberts Smith – white guys accused of rape and murder. Real Aussie men.
Free To Air Commercial TV Lacks Indigenous Faces Have you ever asked yourself why there are so few Indigenous Australians in the media, more generally, and in public life? Could it be generations and centuries of neglect and indifference to their fate? Could it be the lack of a helping hand outstretched to our brown skinned brothers and sisters over the journey? You see, the media has been the public face of our culture and has long been reserved for elite white members of the Australian nation. Yes, this has been changing in a multicultural sense of late with a few more different looking faces fronting the nightly news having escaped from SBS. The commercial networks, Nine, Seven and Ten have been laggards in this regard resisting putting brown faces on screen for as long as they can. No wonder this media is dying a not so slow death these days. They are like the Liberal Party unrepresentative of a modern Australia.
The State Of The AFL Media On Free To Air TV Where are the Indigenous AFL media representatives on Channel Nine? What you get on shows like Footy Confidential are sly types likes Tom Morris and Sam McClure spreading unsubstantiated rumours about players and trades. It is a pretty low form of life. Eddie McGuire and James Hird do a pretty good job but the lack of brown skinned representation is a big black hole in the show’s credibility. When will the free to air TV realm enter the 21C? Don’t get me started on Seven, as it’s even worse over there. “Footy Classified is an Australian television program broadcast two nights per week on the Nine Network “ - (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Footy_Classified) “Do you want to know why the AFL media always gets it wrong? Essentially, it is because they invariably focus on the wrong things. All the ‘so-called’ footy experts are, in the main, not coaches but ex-players and TV announcers. Yes, they do know a lot about AFL via their first hand experiences but not necessarily the secret sauce that delivers consistently winning performances. If they did they would be earning millions as head coaches. In the media they are paid to pontificate. Paid to fill the air time with the hot air of their opinions.” - https://www.golfdom.com.au/why-the-afl-media-always-gets-it-wrong/ ©GolfDom
