Part 2 of oldies that remind me of Spamtenna:
Part 1 here.
1/11: You’re Breaking My Heart; either the one from Vic Damone or Jerry Vale.
“You’re breaking my heart ‘cause you’re leaving—” I mean c’mon. Most of the lyrics are like this.
I will say the next lyrics after that one is “you’ve fallen for someone new,” which I personally don’t feel like makes sense for these two; however it could be read as a metaphor for Tenna thinking Spamton had left him to become a big shot with someone else.
“It isn’t too easy believing… you’d leave after all we’ve been through. It’s breaking my heart to remember… the dreams we depended upon. You’re leaving a slow-dying ember. I’ll miss you, my love, when you’re gone.”
Etc etc etc.
2/12: To Each His Own; and I love quite a few different covers for this one - The Clovers; The Platters; Eddy Howard; and Marty Robbins.
This one includes a lot of more metaphorical things I feel, but here are the lyrics that stand out that make me think of the lads.
“What good is a song of the words just don’t belong; and a dream must be a dream for two? No good alone; to each his own.” — “If a flame is to grow, there must be a glow; to open each door there’s a key. I need you, I know; I can’t let you go; your touch means too much to me, dear.”
I imagine this song for both of them honestly. The flame stuff above is about Spamton having the passion and determination to become a big shot; the “can’t let you go” is Tenna as we know his lonely heart to be.
3/13: My Special Angel; The Vogues.
I’d give y’all a lyric preview for this one too, but then I’d end up adding the whole thing. Highly recommend giving this one a listen. I imagine it from Tenna’s perspective about Spamton of course, however the opposite would certainly be an intriguing way to look at it as well.
4/14: The Best Things In Life Are Free; Sam Cooke.
This is here because 1: I find it ironic given Spamton’s whole deal. & 2: I like imagining them perform a duet version for a show or at the bar they frequent or something. It’s a fun one.
“Moon belongs to everyone; best things in life, they’re free. Stars belong to everyone. They glitter there for you and for me.”
5/15: I’ve Got The World On A String; Kay Starr, but there’s so many different covers everywhere oh my gosh.
“I’ve got the world on a string; I’m sitting on a rainbow got the string around my finger. What a world; what a life - I’m in love!.” — “I’d be a silly so-and-so, if I should ever let you go; ‘cause all my life on you depends, right up until the very end.”
This one is here fore pure irony, however it is very fun to imagine AUs to. Especially ones where Spamton stays with Tenna; where things are going well for him right up until the phone call; or just imagining the exact opposite happening, for angst.
6/16: The Sweetest Dream; The Ink Spots.
“The sweetest dream began in my heart, when I first met you.” Realizing the opportunities that could come with working with each other during their first meeting.
“I held your hand—” Shook hands. “—and that was the start of a dream for two.” They’re gonna be big shots together yay!! (Ignore the manipulation coughcough).
The next lyrics here are about blue eyes; so either Spamton’s eyes are blue or it’s ironically referring to Tenna’s screen lol.
Whatever it may be, I imagine this as a song from both of their perspectives. It’s such a good one for them.
7/17: Ring, Telephone, Ring; The Ink Spots.
Another one for irony, however despite the title making one think of Spamton I actually imagine this one from Tenna’s perspective.
“I’m lonesome tonight; ring, telephone, ring. I’m through with pretending; there’s no way to forget…. I’m miss [him] tonight; ring, telephone, ring.” Etc.
Something something Tenna kept Spamton’s old telephone in the hopes that Spamton would one day call back from wherever he was being a big shot; and despite having been insisting that he didn’t care he’s feeling so lonely that he admits to himself that he misses Spamton and wants him to come back call.
(There’s a whole ass fic idea with this one—)
8/18: I’m Getting Sentimental Over You; Betty Driver, The Ink Spots, or The Pied Pipers.
“Never thought I’d fall; but now I hear love’s call. I’m getting sentimental over you.” — “I thought I was happy I could live without love; now I must admit, love is all I’m thinking of.”
This one is very Spamton-coded to me.
9/19: I Wish I Could Say The Same; The Ink Spots.
This one I imagine to alternate between the two!!
“They say you never speak about me; never even mention my name. And that you get along without me. I wish I could say the same.” — Spamton.
“All that’s left is just an ember; gone is all the want of the flame. The dreams we shared — you don’t remember. I wish I could say the same.” — Tenna.
It’s so good absjdkkfgiskfik [keysmash].
10/20: The World We Knew; by Frank Sinatra.
I know this song is really popular, but maaaaaaan is there a reason.
No lyric spoilers for this one, but trust me when I say it screams big shot era. The whole song feels like it’s from Tenna’s perspective as he reminisces, and I can picture animations of him looking at scrapbooks and walking down hallways he and son frequented often and being sad on his balcony and walking the streets of TV World underneath neon lights and and and—
Bonus!!:
Last post someone recommended Something Stupid by Frank and Nancy Sinatra, which I also believe fits really freakin’ well. Let me know if y’all have anymore recs, please; I’d love to give them a listen!!!!
