Eden Park: Rugby in New Zealand
If you have ever heard anything about New Zealand, you know that they are famously known for their rugby. Their national team is called the All Blacks, which is considered the best rugby team in the world. The team consists of New Zealanders and a few others from various countries that have played rugby for most of their lives. Our group had the opportunity to go to Eden Park in central Auckland, which is where the All Blacks play their home games.
While touring Eden Park, we met with Ant Strachan on the administrative team, and he gave us a snapshot of what the rugby system looks like in New Zealand. It is very VERY different from the system we have in America, and to explain it, Strachan literally had to draw out a pyramid on a white board. It looked like this:
Most kids start playing around the age of four or five, and until they are about 13 years old, they play for various club teams. Once they get to the age of 14-15, they start to play for their school teams. After graduating from school, these players go to various rugby academies to fully develop their skills and get looks to play at the next professional level. The professional players that are the best are chosen to play for the All Blacks.
There have been instances in All Blacks history where players have skipped levels. For example, Strachan was speaking of one player that went straight from school to the All Blacks team. He was described as a “freak athlete”. This is very rare and does not happen often. Most athletes go through each level to make it to the All Blacks Team. It is a very interesting process, and it has made me look at the American sport system from a brand new perspective!
