Edible Fungi King Penguin Books One of earliest in the series, published during wartime in 1943. Not sure if this was intended as a practical guide to supplement rationing but a pretty little book though. I illustrated the Cantharellus lilacinus a short while ago. It's a fungus that is kind of hard to find information on. I had two references photos from a scientific paper to base my illustration on, having never seen it in the field. Until a trip deep into Toolangi forest presented me with one solitary mushroom. It's almost exclusively found in the Central Highlands of Victoria and very little is known about its conservation status. It IS edible but I didn't want to risk potentially eating the last of this species to satisfy a general culinary curiosity. So I let it be with the hope that it might respawn somewhere else in this incredible forest. Lion's Mane Fungi (Hericium erinaceus) is edible and apparently imparts a flavor of lobster when cooked. If you've tried it, please let us know how it tastes! There are some close, well-informed answers by @missaudreysadventures @pipingroller and @mendez_aranda . The third species seems to be the difficult one, so here's another clue: the third fungus is part of the cantharellus genus. I'm receiving the species imformation cards from the printer today so I'll reveal the answers in a 4 or 5 hours.
