Wednesday 25 March 2026
A species endemic to Lord Howe Island, Australia, Howea belmoreana (Belmore sentry palm, curly palm, paradise palm) is often confused with the Howea fosteriana (kentia palm), the former species is much more slow-growing, smaller at maturity, and the leaves are distinctly recurved. Here the fronds were arching over the glasshouse range path at Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK.

Sori (spore-bearing organs) on a Hart's-tongue fern frond.
Frond is the star of my "Advice Things Are Ad-Nice" notes for some reason.
🌿 Revue horticole.. Paris: Librairie agricole de la maison rustique, 1829-1974.. Original source Image description: Historical botanical illustration of Mussenda frondosa featuring a single stem with broad, green, prominently veined leaves and a cluster of small, star-shaped yellow flowers at the top. Some leaves are fully colored in green, while others are sketched in faint outlines, highlighting the frond structure. The background is a beige, aged paper texture typical of 19th-century botanical prints. The detailed depiction emphasizes the plant’s leaf shape, venation, and flower arrangement.
