[ ☂️ ]ㅤ.ㅤdo they crave touch or fear it ? it seems to me that Ed leads a very lonely life - outside from his quiz nights, his book stuff and his outings with Mother, he doesn't seem to have much in the way of a friendship that would lean into touch, and i think it's prolly been this way for a long time now so i'm absolutely HUGELY on the train that he craves touch something rotten!!!

like, does anyone ever hug him?! NO. he's down there in his archive all on his own for the most part, then he goes home to his lonely home, still on his own... 😭😭😭 so yeah, he craves it like he craves affection, and i think he'd likely think himself a very sad and pathetic man for it, so he gets all up in his head but then Joe or Miles touch him and he just fucking melts, oughhh

[ 🌧️ ]ㅤ.ㅤis there a pain they refuse to heal from ? well, yes absolutely - his guilt over those girls dying clearly takes its toll on him even through to s4 and after what happens to Morgan, i can't see him getting over it any time soon. i think also he wants to feel bad about it, he thinks he deserves the pain and the guilt, so he's also not so eager to try and heal from it either (thinking about his convo with Joe where he says Joe doesn't give him the answer he's looking for about this, knowing he'll have to learn live with it doesn't feel like healing either).

i do think in his rough way, Miles would help him start to get back on that path of healing, because he's just very pragmatic and experienced, and he knows that you can't let the job get in your head or it'll ruin you. i feel like that might be more helpful for him than Joe's frankness (not just saying this cos i'm on the EdMiles train something rotten I PROMISE LOL)

[ 🍃 ]ㅤ.ㅤdo they feel like they belong ? NO!!!!! ANGRYCRY EMOTE!!!!! 😭😭😭 AND THE REST OF THE TEAM BEING ARSEHOLES TO HIM DOESN'T HELP!!!!! i feel like there's times where he was beginning to feel like maybe he does belong, but then there's a comment from Mansell or Kent, or he remembers the shit with Riley and then it all comes crashing back down again and he's ashamed and embarrassed that he ever thought he could belong in the first place 😭😭😭😭

ofc Miles catches wind of this, especially after he starts to get more protective (and a bit possessive) of Ed and he puts paid to that straight away in that fucking gruff, sincere way of his (ough). he'd ALSO have a hard word with Joe i think at this point, just to bring it to his attention and to be like "listen, don't be harsh with him, I know, I know I've changed my tune but I'm being serious" and then after that, Joe continues to bring Ed into their investigations and gives him encouragement and just tries to build him up a bit.

and then they're all going home and he's working with Miles to just thoroughly and completely blow Ed's back out until he can't help but know he belongs, at least with them, and that's all that matters 🥰🥰

Ed: Uh, a quick word, if you can spare a moment? Joe: Of course. Ed: How do you do this job, Joe? How do you bear the weight, not let it crush you? Joe: The job chose me. I'm a detective. I can't do anything else. Ed: But the dead. Do you see them at night, when you lie down to sleep? Joe: Yes, I do. Ed: Do they forgive you? Joe: (significant pause) I've learned to live with them. That's all you can do. They become a part of you, you know, a part of your life. You never forget them. [Ed nods, goes to sit back down] Joe: Does that not help? Ed: It's not the answer I was hoping for.

Morgan: Wow, that's quite an atmosphere between you two Miles: Don't worry about it, it's the way we work Morgan: Oh. Do you like working like this? Miles: Love it. Morgan: (to Joe) Are you happy with the situation? Joe: No, I'm not Morgan: Do you want to talk about it? Joe: It's very kind of you to offer, but I don't- expect you to fix... Miles: I'll talk. No problem. Soon as he apologises, I'll yap til the cows come home. Joe: (talking over Miles) Why should I apologise for trying to save a man's life?! Miles: You didn't listen! You went off half cocked, you put yourself and others at risk, and you could have got yourself killed! Joe: Why do you have to worry about me so much?! I mean, you're not my mother! You're always telling me what to do, you're always sticking your oar in! Miles: You know your problem? You got no wife and kids, so you think it doesn't matter what happens to you! You don't care! Morgan: But you do. Miles: I have to! He hasn't got anyone else! [significant pause] Miles: You do realise, don't you, if you'd have got shot, the only person crying at your funeral is me. [he turns and storms out of the room, slamming the door] Joe: (to Morgan) I'm... I'm sorry you had to hear that. Morgan: It's natural when we feel threatened to want to assert our authority, impose rules. Joe: He can't help himself. He doesn't even try. Morgan: I was talking about you.

Miles: Sorry I uh, stormed out like that. Morgan: Well, I hope I didn't make things worse. Miles: Well, I feel much better. Maybe I should shout at him more often. Morgan: You know, there's a loyalty between you that most couples would love to have. But the fact is, you're not married, and DI Chandler is free to make his own choices. Miles: What, you're saying I shouldn't care what happens to him? Morgan: I think you should care less. If you leave him be, he won't push you away. Miles: (looks pensive) Hope you're not charging me for this. Morgan: (laughs) No, it's- it's friendly advice.

Miles: Leave a trail of breadcrumbs for me next time, will you? Joe: I know you thought I was wrong, to try and save Blythe. And you're right. Walking out in front of a gunman doesn't bother me. It doesn't- it doesn't frighten me the way it should. Miles: I was a bit harsh. Riley would cry at your funeral, and Kent, actually. Kent more than anyone. Joe: It is... it is possible that there's a person in this world that's right for me. But the thought of asking her to go on a... You know, to... Well, it terrifies me. Miles: I know it seems that girls can do more damage than bullets, but it's not true. Joe: Yea, well it's- it's the way I am. It's the way I've always been. But- but it's not the way I want to be.
