Joe: The job chose me. I'm a detective. I can't do anything else.
Ed: But the dead. Do you see them at night, when you lie down to sleep?
Joe: Yes, I do.
Ed: Do they forgive you?
Joe: (significant pause) I've learned to live with them. That's all you can do. They become a part of you, you know, a part of your life. You never forget them.
[Ed nods, goes to sit back down]
Joe: Does that not help?
Ed: It's not the answer I was hoping for.

Morgan: Wow, that's quite an atmosphere between you two
Miles: Don't worry about it, it's the way we work
Morgan: Oh. Do you like working like this?

Morgan: (to Joe) Are you happy with the situation?
Joe: No, I'm not
Morgan: Do you want to talk about it?
Joe: It's very kind of you to offer, but I don't- expect you to fix...
Miles: I'll talk. No problem. Soon as he apologises, I'll yap til the cows come home.
Joe: (talking over Miles) Why should I apologise for trying to save a man's life?!
Miles: You didn't listen! You went off half cocked, you put yourself and others at risk, and you could have got yourself killed!
Joe: Why do you have to worry about me so much?! I mean, you're not my mother! You're always telling me what to do, you're always sticking your oar in!
Miles: You know your problem? You got no wife and kids, so you think it doesn't matter what happens to you! You don't care!
Morgan: But you do.
Miles: I have to! He hasn't got anyone else!
[significant pause]
Miles: You do realise, don't you, if you'd have got shot, the only person crying at your funeral is me. [he turns and storms out of the room, slamming the door]
Joe: (to Morgan) I'm... I'm sorry you had to hear that.
Morgan: It's natural when we feel threatened to want to assert our authority, impose rules.
Joe: He can't help himself. He doesn't even try.
Morgan: I was talking about you.

Miles: Sorry I uh, stormed out like that.
Morgan: Well, I hope I didn't make things worse.
Miles: Well, I feel much better. Maybe I should shout at him more often.
Morgan: You know, there's a loyalty between you that most couples would love to have. But the fact is, you're not married, and DI Chandler is free to make his own choices.
Miles: What, you're saying I shouldn't care what happens to him?
Morgan: I think you should care less. If you leave him be, he won't push you away.
Miles: (looks pensive) Hope you're not charging me for this.
Morgan: (laughs) No, it's- it's friendly advice.

Joe: I know you thought I was wrong, to try and save Blythe. And you're right. Walking out in front of a gunman doesn't bother me. It doesn't- it doesn't frighten me the way it should.
Miles: I was a bit harsh. Riley would cry at your funeral, and Kent, actually. Kent more than anyone.
Joe: It is... it is possible that there's a person in this world that's right for me. But the thought of asking her to go on a... You know, to... Well, it terrifies me.
Miles: I know it seems that girls can do more damage than bullets, but it's not true.
Joe: Yea, well it's- it's the way I am. It's the way I've always been. But- but it's not the way I want to be.
Miles: Well, whatever happens, you know I'll stand by you.

okay this one probably depends on whereabouts in the series we're talking, because Early Miles wouldn't talk about a lot of things that Later Miles does manage to do this (thinking specifically of the bit where he has a panic attack on the beach when they first find out about the Krays), but i still think he's not the kind to really talk much about his fears at all unless the situation would demand it.
BUT for a specific fear, i think.... hm... definitely something along the lines of losing his power and the respect of his men! it's something we see him struggling with, but i think it'd take a lot of booze and an atmosphere of opening up, sharing truths, to get him to actually talk about it with Joe.
however i think with Ed it might come a little bit easier, if only because they have a totally different dynamic to Joe and Miles - Miles saw Ed at his most vulnerable (and is continuing to do so in the world of my fic series hehehe), so i feel like that would encourage him to be a little more open with Ed. even tho he's also seen Joe very vulnerable during his OCD episodes, he has a different relationship with Joe where he's almost a bit of a mentor, but he doesn't have that pressure with Ed u know? and i think also he started off not really giving two shits whether he had Ed's respect because he'd think that he automatically had it due to his position of power over him (and also lets face it, he didn't respect Ed at all lolsob), and i think the more they experiment with the cuffs and further, the more that relationship would develop to the point where Miles felt like he could also be vulnerable with Ed.

okay this one i definitely think he wouldn't admit that he's also into men. i hc him as being bi, but i think he'd NEVER put a label on himself that way, he'd talk around it or just say he likes what he likes and that's the end of that topic thank you very much, and why does it matter anyway?!

OOHHH SCARS 🥰🥰 i think he has a lot of scars tbh!! we don't know much about his past but as a DS he was prolly a beat copper first (do we know what his career path was??? i forget) and i can absolutely see him getting multiple scars in the course of his duty. thinking about it now, i'm gonna say i hc him as having a few across his hands, one across his hip, one on his collarbone and then the lovely new one he gets during the first case with Joe 🥰🥰🥰 scars for kissingggg but he's not gonna go talking about them - they're just things he got in the line of duty, nothing to fuss over goddamn it!! (ofc he'd stop complaining as soon as Ed or Joe got their hands on them, mapping them out with fingers and kisses)
