1920s New York’s Harlem was the centre of an intellectual, social and artistic movement known as the Harlem Renaissance. It was the result of a great number of African Americans migrating from the South. Through literature, music, fashion, the artists wanted to fight the steretypes surrounding the African American community and celebrate their identity. Jean Toomer was one of the nationally known authors, nevertheless, he supposedly resisted this association with the Harlem Renaissance and racial classifications.

According to Richard Eldridge, Toomer "sought to transcend standard definitions of race. I think he never claimed that he was a white man," Mr. Eldridge said. "He always claimed that he was a representative of a new, emergent race that was a combination of various races. He averred this virtually throughout his life."

To his publisher, he wrote "My racial composition and my position in the world are realities that I alone may determine."

His book, Cane (1923) contains short stories, vignettes and poems, describing and exploring the African Americans’ experience in the United States, but also the North.
