Shortly before disappearing, Edwin and her fiancée #RosaBud have broken off their engagement. #NevilleLandless, who argued with and attacked Edwin for his secret infatuation for Rosa, and Edwin's opium-addict young uncle #JohnJasper, also in love with and later pestering Rosa, are the main suspects... While the valiant and friendly #SeptimusCrisparkle advocates for the former's innocence, #MrGrewgious, Rosa's dutiful and wary guardian, tries to protect the girl. Also, #DickDatchery, introduced late in the novel, is revealed to be investigating the case... I believe neither Neville nor Jasper is directly connected with Edwin's loss. #Dickens has included many obvious red herrings, and too obvious suspects that seem misleading in the #novel, which could've been one of the greatest murder mysteries ever written with a totally unpredictable ending, if he had been able to complete. ~ This edition also includes "The Trial of John Jasper", a 1914 play NOT by Dickens, which I may read later as it seemed uninteresting and sort of absurd. ~ «‘… as I say, it don't do to boast of what you are; but show how you came to be it, and then you prove it.’» (Ch. His birthday is getting closer, and that widely-acclaimed Russian writer definitely deserved a birthday post, so I thought it would be a good idea to buy his best-known plays.
